Inter-Device Audio in macOS Sierra

Hey everyone,

just trying to verify: Is it just me or did Apple secretly overhaul Inter-Device-Audio a bit on Sierra?
For instance, I noticed that latency seems down to a reasonable level now (I recall that on El Capitan, that feature was basically unusable because of some sort of noticeable latency).

Also they have changed the menu. Seems like it is now part of Audio Devices:

Comments

  • I'm still on El Cap and the layout looks the same to me and latency is quite usable. Maybe they improved things in a smaller, earlier update?

  • Never had any issues with it in El Cap either.

  • Haven't upgraded yet still on el cap, I need to know kore will still work and my other plugs before I take the plunge, but I see what your saying. Honeypot, nice name btw is on audio devices instead of being in its own ios device browser section, is that section still even there in sierra?

  • Interesting, last time I tried it on El Cap you had to switch it on through the iOS Device Browser, which seems gone from Audio-MIDI-Setup.

Also Aggregate Device is working with iDevices now. I kind of remember this was impossible before.

  • Aha! Aggregation is potentially very useful. Does it support multiple iDevices?

However, I note that it only shows In's not Out's. That's potentially not very useful... (i.e. one can't use an iDevice hooked in this way in an FX chain)

  • Aggregates are working with iDevices for me in El Cap.

  • I've got this setup on mine, running in el cap, setup the ipad on its own first, then used the same ipad with studiomux running so i could record system audio and iaa synths and fx via studiomux. Can be quite temperamental and I haven't been able to recreate it as my ipad just comes up with the same name.

  • Geee, alright, I've been very late to the game then ;)

I think you have to be running ios 9 and later for multiple ios devices, just tried it with my iphone 4 and ios device browser came up with a warning sign saying ios 9 and later:(

  • Anything changed in Quicktime capture?

Uh-huh. I haven't used El C for audio yet. I just recently updated my main studio system to Yosemite. Doubt it will go further than that for a good while yet until I find an acceptable workaround for obsoleted drivers for expensive studio hardware that aren't supported beyond Yosemite (and then only in one case by using a hack of Snow Leopard drivers that happen to work :anguished: )

    It ain't broke.

Now on a development Macbook, I have El C on an external drive. Guess I could try that there, but, again, it doesn't look fully functional if only In's are supported.

I've tried to streamline my workflow to just using a mbp and ipad, still trying to refine it, just using a lightening cable and headphones instead of my soundcards, midi hub etc, means I get more time on the sofa. You could set it up to add more outs, i set it up mainly focusing on inputs to stack synths or just have a few sound beds running from my ipad, I'd rarely use most the inputs at once, but it's nice setting up all your synths on different channels at the start and just jamming.

I've kept snow leopard on a different partition just to have compatibility with my old software and hardware. Need to re-setup my xp machine as the gpu conked out due to a mouse trying to make a home in my tower, via an open slot above my graphics card, which the little shit dragged it balls across repeatedly. I'll probably go for an iconnect soundcard when I start using external gear again and add it to my aggregate device, use it as a way to include my old iphone/ipad too, I'm glad for now to only have a few wires on my setup.
