Can anyway recommend an app that has midi learn on preset change?

Hey guys, does anyone know if there are any apps or a way to make preset changes with hardware via a midi learn function. I just got the Launchkey keyboard and I love the launchkey and launchpad apps but they don't have midi clock support yet. I love how you can change to favourite presets with a quick tap on a pad on the keyboard but I can't use launchkey as it doesn't seem to accept midi clock in yet.

  • I'm confused. Are you looking for apps that support midi program changes? Or specifically for apps that support using a random MIDI CC to trigger a program change?

If the latter, I'm not sure of any off the top of my head but MIDI Bridge will probably help out. Problem is, lots and lots of apps don't support any sort of program change.

The Yonac apps are a good bet. They support midi program change and have pretty extensive midi learn functionality.

  • Thesys & Turnado support Program Change but the presets have to be in the "Midi Programs" folder and uncheck "ignore program change" in settings.

Like @syrupcore said very few apps support it

  • Oops sorry i left out info, i'm after synth apps. So i can assign pads on my midi controller to change to different instrument sounds. That Thesys looks cool, ima gonna download that right now!

  • It's super flexible and you an do a ton of stuff with it including automation of several diff things. I recommend looking at the manual a bit. Learn at least how to use the Alt, Shift, Ctrl, and Cmd buttons they help make things easier. Also note that it has its own on-board synth but is best used via Midi with another Synth (don't forget to turn off internal synth). Also you can map midi CC parameters to a midi controller for Thesys as well via CC Learn

  • sounds pretty cool, i haven't got it yet, but it looks pretty interesting. Maybe not exactly what i'm after but i do have a appdiction problem so i will get it haha! I did find Nlog synth, it's got some pretty cool sounds on it and does accept program and bank changes. I have now realised that my launchkey keyboard doesn't send program or bank change midi messages anyway :(

  • Sounds like MidiBridge may work for you. The Stream Byter module in it is pretty flexible and can convert note messages to program change messages.

  • just looked and Magellan doesn't seem to support connecting CC events to MIDI Program change. MIDI bridge or bust I'm afraid.

  • Damn ey, Magellan is a nice sounding synth! Ok thanks funjunkie, that's great that midi bridge can do that, I have got that so il see if I can get that working :)

  • Can anyone tell me anything about Sysex messages I tried to inform myself but can't seem to find anything substantial on it...

  • I've been dicking around with midibridge for a couple of hours now but feel like a blind man with a broken feeling stick! I am getting closer but would love some assistance! I messed around with program change messages from midi bridge which only worked when i had midibridge in the foreground. So i tested something, i got the launchkey keyboard to send a message to quickswap apps (just realised that was possible..so cool!) but it only swaps to the next or previous app when i have midibridge in the foreground. I can't get my head around this. I guess once i figure this out i can setup heaps of scenes. Each scene triggered by a pad and having different program change values on each scene. Am i close? Sorry if i sound confusing as midi confuses me!!

  • @JMSexton - I believe Sysex messages are hardware specific, so there's no real standard. I've not had much need to use them, so I haven't drilled into it much. Are you trying to do something specific with it?

@theinfinate - I haven't tried what you're describing, but my first stab at it would be to enable the Stream Byter module, add the command line below, save it as a preset within Stream Byter, and test it.

    N0 XX = C0 XX

This assumes you're using midi channel 1. The left side just indicates any note on would map to the right side...which is the program change. I'm no expert by any stretch and not even sure if that's possible in MidiBridge, but from what I've read, it seems like it is supported. If that doesn't work, and no one else on this forum has an answer, the link I posted above also has a link to the MidiBridge forum, and the dev's contact link. You should be able to get an answer there.

  • thanx heaps funjunkie. Yep it looks like stream byter will do what i want it to do hopefully. It comes down to me figuring out how to do it but. I'm a midiot but aha!
