Is there a market for a higher level iOS controller?

We have some decent controllers for iOS.

There's:

But apart from maybe the Korg NanoStudio, nothing really seems very iOS orientated from the outset.

Many controllers still need access to a laptop to get the most out of them. Very few are designed with the whole iOS ecosystem in mind. Even fewer still are designed much beyond entry level in terms of features, build quality and price.

No market? Not big enough market? Been tried and failed?

What do you think?

  • I definitely want one. Always hate keys on controllers.

  • I can't help but wonder if part of the reason is the fact that ios itself is tactile, as opposed to using a computer that isn't. Not tactile in exactly the same way, but still tactile. I do think controllers can coexist with touchscreen, and I do have keyboards but often just use the touchscreen because it's in front of me, and nothing else needs be hooked up so I can work anywhere at any time. Much like my reasons for liking a headphone jack...

  • Yes love the tactile nature of the touch screen, but nothing beats real knobs, faders and pads used in conjunction with the touch screen.

Sliding my finger on a touchscreen XY pad is great, yet using an onscreen knob is just pants most of the time. Sliders are not too bad unless too small and at least they show the correct value all the time. Yet not all controllers are just the old sliders. Look at the new touch sliders out there.

Screen real estate also is a big issue, and farming some out to a controller just makes sense with limited screen, poor multitasking and slow app switching on iPad.

  • Is it the often poor midi implementation holding the companies back? Is it the never knowing what Apple will do next with either hardware or ios?

  • I don't actually like touch screens. Much of the time it responds to one of the other fingers that isn't the one I intend to be causing influence, with the consequent random and bonkers behavior usual to touchscreen devices.

  • Yes, anything that needs perfect positioning on the screen just does not work. I have fat fingers and as for my thumbs.....don't go there :p

  • Until touch screens can register velocity a controller will always be needed.

  • I would even go as far as to suggest that music controllers as a whole are pretty much in their infancy. Yes some new tech coming about, but still mainly in the idea of key / note input. I'm sure there is more creative tech to come, but even the basics seem to be either missing the point of iOS, or just plain ignoring it.

I think BSP is a crap of a MIDI controller. I own it. Very poor MIDI. To do anything you got to hookup to PC and are faced with a highly confusing editor...LOL

I bought it for the step sequencer. That I like a lot, even though it is very limited.

Why do you say BSP is made for iOS? There is no iOS editor, it can't even be directly connected to iPad without a button sequence. It is compatible with iPad, just like my 10 year old Edirol PCR 300....

  • Yah, i think it is likely a market thing and the fact that glass (and not hauling around extra bulk/weight) is still pretty cool for most people. Even game controllers don't seem to catch on.

  • The time will come, though, that hand movements can be discerned with detail and accuracy without relying on an arbitrary flat plane to be dictated to by. The reason for this is that in VR (and for serious applications, AR 1 actually) we need to be able to figure out what the users hands are up to. A glass flat plane is pretty much the opposite of what could work there.

    1. Apple keep going on about VR having no commercial reality for them, but they're actively researching AR. I half suspect that they don't want to get sued by someone's family if the person walked out into the road blindly with an Apple VR thing and got run over. ↩︎

Nope I'm saying BSP is ok, but like most things is not very iOS orientated. Like you and I said, it needs a PC to get the best out of it.

So yeah, not much that says I'm an iOS u it first and foremost.

Lol let the VR trials commence. I can see this being a thing, after all nobody takes responsibility for their own actions in this day and age :p

  • I can see this thread is going to go all over the place hehe

Beat step pro is not for everyone clearly, as i use it daily in my studio to sync my ob6, Jupiter 80, tempest, and also an s950. It keeps things working well and for my needs it fits a piece of the puzzle.

What i am looking for to compliment the pad pro 13inch, is a midi keyboard to use whilst on the go....

  • It is the controller for the controller that i have a problem with

  • Yeah BSP is cool and has lots of uses. So do many of the cool controllers out there. It's just controllers with iOS front and centre (even if they are for other uses) are just sorely lacking.

Where's the controllers with iOS music app templates already in memory. Even a controller that had some front end software in the vain of Modstep.

it's certainly a challenge to learn and setup the thing properly...
but since I have TC-Data, knobs are just plain boring to me.
For sequenced controllers Oscilab is cool, but not the most smart in switching apps - at least in my case it's usually midi hickup then. These 2 cover most of my needs.

Yeah I have that too. Problem then comes back to screen real estate. Now if I had more iPads then it would get more use.
