iOS Sysex Librarian?

Looking for simple app that will send and receive MIDI Sysex dumps. Line 6's MIDI Memo Recorder was my goto for a while but it requires the use of their hardware and we've broken up.

Is there another app that'll do this? Preferably one dedicated to this purpose vs capturing in Auria or something. If it backed up to a cloud service like Dropbox, even better.

Comments

  • Midi Tool Box does Sysex well , but no Dropbox or other file out method except computer connected iTunes/iFunbox currently .
Dev did say he was looking to add this but that was a while ago & nothing yet

  • Cheers @wally. I've long eyed that app. Perhaps this will push me off the fence. I don't mind paying $10 for the app, particularly because it does a lot more than sysex dumps, but will hold out a bit in hopes of something simpler/cheaper.

  • Your post somehow reminded me of https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sysex-base/id1004689966?mt=8. Also $10 but laser focused on sysex dumps and has dropbox (etc) support. Both are universal which is a big bonus for me (unlike, say, Patch Base)

    @syrupcore
When I was under the studio desk , wrapped in midicables , trying to troubleshoot a midi connundrum , the $10 were speedily & gratefully " confirmed " . So the Sysex management was a welcome bonus , which continues to serve me well , although I also would like Dropbox or similar .
If you have (the later released ) MidiFlow , the diagnostics won't be as appealing as they were a few years ago , although they disappear so quickly in MF , MTB is more useable.

  • Yep, monitoring was what had me looking at it previously. Have MF, MidiVision and another (name escapes me atm) but they all have some shortcoming or other.

I started a thread about the two coffeeshopped apps a few weeks back. I have both, though in my limited use case (Volca FM), Sysex Base isn't going to work for me. It seemed be the more stable of the two apps. But both generally work and are unique at doing what they do on iOS.

  • cheers @StormJH1. I'm still eyeing patchbase for use with my VFM for sure. If it was able to do 'dumb' sysex send/receive I'd be all over it. I'll probably wind up with both though. :(

  • I send sysex patches to my Roland Juno-106 using TB-Midi Stuff. Not the same as something like Sysex Base, in that it can't record incoming Sysex, but if you know the string you want to send, you can create buttons in TBMS and use it to send the data on press. You can also map midi cc or notes to the buttons.

Patch Base (not Sysex Base) is great for Volca FM because it allows you to load individual instruments/programs one-at-a-time and then save them into one of the 32 slots on the Volca. In reading a lot of comments, reddit threads, etc. about the Volca, I think a lot of people are under the impression that you can only import entire banks (which wipes out whatever you had on the device) via "clone" or by importing an entire sysex bank through the MIDI cable. It's a heck of a lot easier to work with only 32 programs if you can edit/replace them one-by-one. For example, there's a bank I found online with the popular "Solid Bass" patch. I want that patch, but I don't want the entire bank that I found it in (which comes with bells and a lot of other stuff I don't want). I thought Sysex Base would allow me to edit one-by-one like I can with Patch Base, but I think that was incorrect.

But even though it does have "Open In" capability and generally works, it's a bit sluggish to import things and navigate in there, and I get a fair amount of crashing. It's still the best option I could find. Dexed for PC is another (free) one, but I couldn't get it to send patches for some reason (likely user error).

Edit: n/m - saw other post

  • Wondering if one of my ~10 @SecretBaseDesign apps already does this and I just didn't realize it.

    Used to be so common...

  • I don't have a SYSEX recorder, but something like GigRig might fit the bill.
    https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/gigrig-midi+/id1090436811?mt=8

It's from Audeonic, so you can be sure the MIDI stuff works right.....

  • Cheers @SecretBaseDesign. That looks like it'd fit the bill indeed. I really like that it will also do arbitrary capture, playback and storage of MIDI and supports open in. Do you happen to know if it supports landscape orientation? Some Audeonic apps do not (and it's crazy making for me).

Actually, same question for @wally re MIDI Tool Box. All of the screens I can find for both apps are portrait only. Sysex Base does landscape which is how my ipad is mounted 98% of the time.

  • edited October 2016

yep , portrait only I'm afraid , sorry didnt think to mention .

  • Ugh but thank you for the info @Wally

  • @syrupcore -- Yes, GigRig supports landscape and portrait.

  • Sold! Thanks @SecretBaseDesign I'll still buy yours if you ever decide to go there. :)
