How make you a new modstep CC Template?

Whats your Workflow to make new Templates for modstep?

Comments

  • For me?

I first make a list of CC's that a device supports.
Then I create a new file and add the CC's to it.

    Is there more to it?

  • Thx samu and where find you all the cc ?

Usually the CC's can be found in the 'user-guide' for the instrument or app in question.

It was quite easy to create a CC-Map for the Roland iOS SoundCanvas but the app is still quite buggy and can sometimes but not always 'ignore' some CCs and It's not possible to control everything via CC it need SysEX too and that is not currently to my knowledge supported by ModSTEP.

I used this 'map' as the source. I could have read thru the manual but Google was faster :D

  • The KArp Odyssey would be pretty quick to do. There's note on. And you're done.

  • Would be really handy if these could be created in a text editor and then imported in MS. They are just text files but I'm not clear on what's what in it, particularly the header. Then you could copy and paste from a MIDI spec online, do a little bulk formatting and profit. Doing them one at a time via the UI is smashingly not fun.

    Oh, simple as that?
    HA.

I'm stuck at the level of, OK, there's a template for the iSem. Uh, huh. Now what?
Will that allow me to use the mod wheel in the iSem app? Or is the mod wheel represented by something within Modstep? OR, say, there's a template for DM2; does this mean I can load the app and quickly play pads and modulate their sounds within Modstep?

  • I've run into a semi-serious 'problem' with modSTEP?!

When hosting IAA-Instrument or AU-X plug-ins in modSTEP there seems to be no way to send Pitch-Bend or Mod-Wheel data to the 'plug-in'?!?!(It looks like modSTEP is sending mod-wheel and pitch-bend but it doesn't reach the IAA-Instrument or AU-X Plug-In?!).

If I host the IAA-Instrument or AU-X plug-in in AUM sending pitch-bend and mod-wheel works without any issues at all..

Hope this gets sorted out in future modSTEP update...

Woah! You pulled the RTFM card!
I did, actually, and I don't even understand what I'm reading.
For instance. I hit the CC folder, and go to the iSem template. I drag the iSem onto the lower half of the page. A note pops up: "Please select a mapped slot," it suggests. What is a mapped slot?

That's the level of midiocy we're talking about here.

Wait, when you put a "laughing hilariously" icon at the end of every sentence, I can't tell if you're being serious or not!

It's not really that hard to create a custom template.

    Once I've done one, yes!
But I don't even understand the metaphor. I'm new to midi as of a few months ago, and nobody actually ever bothers to even say what a CC is, so....

So let's say I just want to use the mod wheel in iSem within Modstep. What do I do?

  • CC just means a Control Change message - a particular category of MIDI message.

  • @ExAsperis99 said:

How are you connecting iSEM to modSTEP?
(iSEM can be used as both IAA-Instrument and Generator, AUv3 and 'Stand Alone').

To automate parameters from the loaded template they need to be added to the 'modulation slots' and 'activated' by tapping to light them up. If you for example need to automate the Pitch Wheel and Mod Wheel they need to be dragged to the 'modulation slots' and activated.

Please do note that the current version of modSTEP appears to have what I would call a severe bug in that it does NOT transmit Pitch-Bend or Mod-Wheel (Other parameters work though) to AUv3 or IAA-Instruments hosted with in modSTEP. (If anyone remembers the forum aliases of the modSTEP devs here in the forum please do tag them so they are made aware of this 'bug/issue').

You can overcome this 'bug' by hosting iSEM in AUM and sending all midi from modSTEP to AUM and routing it to iSEM.(It's not an optimal solution but that's the only way I got it to work).

  • Drag the CCs from the bottom to either set of 8 mapped slots. Up to 16. These will be the controls available for automation. Then you can go to the step sequencer view, root around until you find the CCs, tap any of those eight slots, and now you're controlling those parameters with the XY pads.

I think tht is what the original poster was after.

Where are you in this case 'hosting' synth-master, stand-alone or an an instrument-slot in ModSTEP?
(If I host it inside ModSTEP It doesn't work but if I host it in AUM or Stand-alone or in AB it works like expected).

Instrument spot - At the beginning you can see the Modstep icon top left in Synthmaster (though the title of the video does its best to get in the way).

    Got it...

When I do that on my iPad Air 2 iOS10.0.2 the Mod-Wheel and Pitch-Bend are not sent to the IAA-Instrument or AUv3-Node when it's hosted inside ModSTEP but works flawless when hosted in AUM fed with midi from ModSTEP.
(I also submitted a bug-report to the ModSTEP team yesterday regarding this).

I'm using 9.7 Pro w/ iOs 10. (whatever latest update # is). I haven't tried w/ other IAA's - can confirm works w/ the Novation Circuit template tho, as well. PS - your posts are always educative to me, especially your feature requests, which often lead me to Googling to learn more, cheers!

I've never had any problems controlling external apps or devices using ModSTEP.
Most of the time I host the apps and plug-ins in AUM and I've never bumped into problems where pitch and mod-wheel didn't work. It's when I tried to host the Instruments/Plug-Ins inside ModSTEP i realised it didn't work properly.

Even though I seem 'harsh' with words It's mostly well meant as English is not my native language so I can't 'colour' the content as well as I could if I was using either Swedish or Finnish.

Hope these issue get sorted out soonish.
