  • I have totally ignored this app, and it was only when for some reason I stumbled on this thread (and saw the video by PantsOfDeath) that I understood what it was.

When I first heard about this I saw microtonal in the name, and assumed it was purely for microtonal music. I like microtonal music, but not enough to really justify $20. So I completely wrote it off. Judging by this thread, I'm probably not the only person who thought that.

From this thread and the videos I've learnt that it contains several amazing synths, along with some just awesome sequencers. Which for $20 seems like an amazing bargain. I mean just the physical modelling stuff alone... Not to mention what looks like an easy to use additive synthesizer, and some fantastic sampling capabilities. And then when I learn that this has what looks like multiple great experimental sequencers on top of that (which can also do microtonal). And that it's fully midi/audiobus/IAA, etc. I mean wow.

This feels like an app Amazing Noises/Ape Soft, or Jonatan Liljedahl would produce. And that the people who love their stuff (and there seem to be a lot of us), would love this. They just don't know about it. So maybe you should put less emphasis on the microtonal stuff, and think more about how you can promote it to the weird/experimental wranglers out there. Who need this app, they just don't know it yet. This feels like it should be the groovebox/sequencer of choice for the lunatics out there.

  • Markov chains, state machines and particle sequencers. Jesus.

    Preach!!! :)

ps. I initially made the same assumption based on the "microtonal groovebox" title. The PantsOfDeath video made me take a closer look initially too.

  • cough.. cough.... cough, I concur

I am interested in any synth or sequencer that allows microtonality. They're still a bit rare.

The other features in Dhalang don't interest me too much, there are already plenty of options and apps who cover sampling/sequencing/randomness.

is there any other app that has what this one does integrated within one app?

Sure, but you could say the same about most of ApeSoft/Amazing Noise's stuff. Loads of FX apps out there - but nothing that's really competing with their stuff. TBH, while there are lots of randomness/sequencing apps out there, this is the first pro-level 'unusual' sequencer that I've seen. Markov chains? State machines. Vectors? And piano rolls. That's a long way from fun compositional apps.

And we've yet to see a proper physical modeling on IOS, so that's unique.

I feel like I"m talking myself into buying this in the next few days...

agreed, with the addition that Igor vasilev's apps are untouchable, but apesoft is cool too

Based on what you've said so far, I seriously doubt that you would regret it.

no, I don't think so. You would need several different apps. I must have expressed myself in a wrong way. What I wanted to say is that it is the microtonal aspect of Dhalang which I find most interesting. While most Dhalang users rather seem into sequencing/sampling/randomness.
