"Off Topic": Do you use a Yahoo account?
FYI:
Summary: Yahoo scanning and spying on customers for US government.
Wonder what others companies are doing government bidding in our private lives?

Depends how big the back handers are
Depends how big the back handers are
Hahaha, cling to that illusion - privacy. No such anywhere for years...
If the Government wants to see how poor I am or to watch me take a dump, they are quite welcome
Oh yeah, btw - before retiring, one of the things I did was server security consulting. Believe me, there really is NO such thing as privacy. Ah, the things I've seen. Scary stuff. 'Nuff said...
Yep agree. No privacy anymore. We even installed and payed for all the surveillance devices for our own home too
I always joke around, that from my credit to my organs, I am not much use to anyone..............
Yep me too. I've found a new love for finding stuff on free sites and doing it up. Shame they don't have free organs though, some of mine have been a tad abused over the years.
In fact you are right.
What is even more scary is what the governments are SCARED of............................
Case and point, Western powers are literally dumbfounded on China's desire to collect such detailed info on US citizens through hacking or public and private databases. OF COURSE IN ADDITION to the corporate espionage and patent stuff they freely engage in.
Russia is straight forward straight secrets and military industrial complex pap, but the Chinese are vacuuming up and hacking things that don't make sense to many in the field that I talk to. I mean actual people in DC I talk to.
That leads to the next hurdle I feel is approaching.
May be time for the modernization of Trust Busting of the Cyber and Web Titans of industry.
Then again, there are a handful of folks I know in deeper reaches of the government who feel that Google and Facebook are the government. Always have been.
Perfect tools to model and control your country- down to the pyche. profiles and shopping habits and other proclivities. Facebook is a CIA dream catcher for Christ's sake.
Anyway, before I go on and on.
Replying here may end up being a "Po" decision, but I have had a Yahoo! account since 2001. Even if the gov't has all of it, they would learn very little as I primarily use it as a dumping ground for newsletters, forum sign-ups/PMs, and some online shopping. I do my best to "spread it around" and not depend on any one service too much.
I use gmail, and I'm not sure if they are helping the government spy on me, but they do their fair share of spying on me to make up for it. O well, such is life. Other than work, I can probably count on my two hands and feet how many times I've sen an email in the last year and a half. Of course I receive a good number of emails every day.
Exactly. It's not just gov't spying online. It's Big Tech, advertisers/marketers, hackers, activists, and the unscrupulous.
Governments are generally run by idiots, so I wouldn't worry.
A few years back I started receiving 'emails to my GMail account, addressed to a top US general with the same name as mine. I didn't open any attachments or ones with 'secret' in the title, and sent replies explaining their error, but they kept coming.
Finally I had one copied in to a load of other generals and officials. So I replied to them all, with 'WILL YOU PLEASE STOP SPAMMING ME WITH YOUR SECRETS' in the title, and something about 'fuckwits couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery' in the message bit. Haven't had any since.
'fuckwits couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery'
Thanks for the laugh. I'm going to file that one with, "I'd rather shit in my hands and clap."
You've done it now, you'll have the unholy trinity knocking on your door, Donald, Vladimir and Fox News.
In the US, the real issue is private corporations using our personal data for profit and without consent, compromising our privacy in the process.
I didn't know that one, I'll use it down the pub tonight if I get a chance...
I've told this story a few times on other forums, and haven't had the door kicked in so far...
To be honest after the first one: which was about rota's or something boring, and one from his wife who also seemed to have the wrong address, I was careful not to open them and deleted them straight away after taking note of the senders email and notifying them of the mistake. It was only when they increased in frequency that I thought I'd better get their attention with a more direct approach, which seemed to do the trick. I'm guessing if they'd passed on anything dodgy they would have been in touch by now....or maybe they're just watching me remotely.
I don't use the account for email anyway, just set it up so I could sign into Google stuff. I haven't checked it for years actually, don't think I will now...just in case...
That is an understatement.
Yahoo deleted all the messages in my account about 10 years ago. Now I let google spy on me. Either way we're fucked as long as we're in the matrix.
I have a Yahoo account but I will close it soon. I don't use it for anything important/private but still I don't like when somebody scans my emails. Also, the other reason for getting rid of that account is that I believe Yahoo is finished. Marissa finished its destruction making tens of millions in the process.
As for that NYT article, I think it's full of BS from the Yahoo officials. A state-sponsored terrorist organisation using free email service for communication? Even if so, how did they know that the terrorists were using yahoo mail (not gmail or outlook or any of the other numerous email services) if they didn't know specific email addresses? No, I don't buy it
Yes, there is almost no privacy left. Google collects a ton of data about you (never use google search when logged in to gmail), Facebook does this too. LinkedIn's apps read your contacts, store them somewhere and then spam them without your consent. Win 10 is a total privacy nightmare. And then there's this next hype soon to become a privacy and security disaster - Internet of things...
This guy gets it.
Unless you're a terrorist or a rabid activist for the current party-not-in-power at any particular time, I would be a whole lot more concerned about this:
Hackers now have a treasure trove of user data with the Yahoo breach
Yahoo, whats this?
bla bla
Ask Siri Though she's probably spying on you too
I'm not panicking - passwords are rarely sent by email, and anything that might be at risk - just change the passwords for those accounts, and the main Yahoo one.
Honestly i'm surprised people here either don't care or are completely defeatist about their privacy
I could go on a long rant about this but they say a picture is worth a thousand words
Yes, it's true that if the government targets you there is nothing you can do but there is a world of difference between targeted attacks and blanket surveillance and data collecting. The latter part you absolutely can do something about
Use a VPN, use a browser that respects your freedom by being open source and use browser extensions that blocks all the automatic data collection, don't use windows, encrypt personal files etc. As for mails, if anyone actually do care about their privacy check out protonmail
I don't think I am a defeatist, but I do think I'm a realist. Even though I have nothing to hide, I do value my privacy and I will vote accordingly -- including with my $$$. I've mentioned the measure I take to protect myself here and in other threads. I just can't spend too much time worrying about it.
