I'm kind of frustrated that so many developers opt for the pattern sequencer only approach. Like, if Gadget had a Cubasis style sequencer (and audio tracks) it'd be the perfect mobile DAW. That's my main wish for future apps; non linear arrangers, with parts and tracks.
Not so much my workflow, but things that make any workflow easier:
Multi outs: All devs should add multiple audio outs if at all possible. If it has separate audio tracks, it should have separate audio outs.
Export and import: All devs should cover as many bases as possible. Saves should be covered on synths (single sound and folders). Again multi audio tracks need individual as well as summed export (ideally individual tracks should be selectable for export).
Don't forget midi import and export!
MIDI: All devs should see midi as essential, not a minor option. Your device should be able to send and receive midi. A quality and in depth midi implementation is worth paying for long term!
AudioBus etc: keep your AudioBus, IAA, AU etc up to date. For those apps that ignore these things - shame on you!
IAPs: if you have these within your app, make sure they are not a pain to have. In other words, you should be able to delete what you don't use. You should be able to redownload chosen IAPs, not have to do all at once. Sample packs should be splitable with individual delete and reload if possible.
I was a long-time MPC user ( since 1998 ) but sold all my hardware stuff a few years ago. Since that time I'm producing exclusively with desktop computers. But it's getting a bit boring recently and I would like to get away from the computer again... Guess what, now i'm angry at myself that I've sold all the hardware but I have absolutely no interest in buying overpriced vintage gear again.
I'm using an iPad for three years now, bought A LOT of music apps but strangely iOS could never replace my MPCs let alone the computer for music making.
There are some nice apps out there but there is still nothing which is comparable to a true standalone hardware workflow ( i.e. MPC ), at least for me and my needs.
I'm really looking forward to the Beathawk update and the announced Beatmaker 3 - if they don't deliver, my iPad will continue it's side-kick existence as a sound module/sampling source but won't come nowhere near of being a serious music production tool ( again, that's just me ).
Or I'll sell the iPad and get something like the new Pioneer Toraiz which I tested in the store last week . There's a lot of room for updates on this machine but the workflow and the integration of the touchscreen in conjunction with the knobs ( for more tactile editing ) felt great.

Any advice for someone new to the MPC workflow? I recently got a MIDI controller that came with Akai's MPC software.

Don't throw out the baby with the bath water. The iPad makes a great plug-in, even if you don't use it as a DAW.
iOS music making for me is mainly about making things a bit simpler and working outside the studio. I prefer self contained apps that focus on simplicity while still sounding good if I want to transfer something into a song in the studio. Gadget, Auxy, Mitosynth, and Model 15 are my current go to apps, and I usually use them on their own,
Personally I'd love to see some of the more experimental synthesis apps like borderlands and Mitosynth get incorporated in a groove box type app. I love that we're finally seeing new ways of coming up with interesting synth tones, now I want some way to sequence them easily. On an iPhone.
If an app does something I like I will adapt my workflow to suit, of course if an app has all the usual integration methods - AB/IAA/AU/MIDI then it makes this job easier.
(If Gadget can do it...............anyone can do it)
Standard / Core MIDI NEEDS TO BE WORKING! Apps need to be have functionality and RECOGNITION of other MIDI devices and networks.
(Poison is potentially best synth app in a year, but, no IAA MIDI recognition and no Audiobus makes it useless.)
Meta data usage and recognition for apps using audio files of any kind.
Criticism is welcome IMO, but so often we talk about what is broken/missing/wrong. I'm just as guilty as anyone of this, but I'm hoping this thread stays positive and people will share what IS working for them.
I love many iOS music apps... But for several months now, I have to admit that my Workflow is almost always the same, using only a few apps (and dreaming of 1-2 unexisting apps desperatly lol).
I'm making Hip Hop Beats so this is probably a specific workflow:
I mostly rely on Gadget and BM2 only ;-).
(1) I start by finding a sample/loop I love
(2) Sometimes, I try it with other beats/loops using Blocs Wave (but it is not working well for me currently, as it does not allow to resynch loops together because of a bad silence introduced at the end or beginning of the loop when slipping the sample)
--> I desperatly dream of an app which would allow to resynch recorded loops and samples together, this would be magic !
(3) I cut my loop/sample, timestretch/pitchshift it, and chop it to samples in BM2
(4) I send all my chops from BM2 to Bilbao module in Gadget via Dropbox
(5) I make all my track and publish it to soundcloud from Gadget.
(6) If I want to record additionnal tracks (eg playing guitar or using an IAA/AB app) or vocals, I send my Gadget tracks in Cubasis and complete the song...
--> I desperatly dream of an IAA/AB recorder module in Gadget (with overdub feature as they tried to do in Tabletop)... This would allow to use sounds from other apps like thumbjam or synths... or even record nice vocals/instruments with or without external effects...
Peace.
I a$$ume you mean technically $peaking. Budget$ a$ide.
It is kind of like saying if The Hobbit can be 3D anyone can do it.
My Fault, I didn't read the thread opening.
WORKFLOW:
I guess I best summarize it like this.
Most projects/sessions include:
2 Synths
a. Animoog (100% of the time)
b. Model 15, SynthMaster, Alchemy, or Sampletank
1 Drum App or Drum App Assembly (Gadget or iMaschine)
1 "Touch or Tactile" screen IOS exclusive type app (SAMPLR, TC-11, or lately FLUX PAD)
Samples are often played or sequenced or played in PATTERNING or AUDIOSHARE in the Input slot
Effects Apps I use Stereoizer, Turnado, WOW, VirsynTapeDelay, and FLUX/play if not using an AU situation.
If using AU, I use all the available AU's.
One of my techniques I like using is complete submersion and work my way out. I will make 2 or 3 loops/melodies Iike, then dissect that into multiple melodies and loops. I then reassemble them. This is where I use all the ApeSoft apps, I do this manipulating into LOOPERSONIC most of the time because easy to move audio around.
I repeat this process until satisfied.
I use Genome for MIDI sequencing needs. It is easy and instant to use and perform.
90% of my work is performance / one take recorded. My DJ background finds the need to make changes and apply effects in a dynamic manner - on the fly.
I use LOOPY for the rough phases
I use Group the Loop and/or LAUNCHPAD for the actual song per se' in regard to making sure it is able to be recorded as well as played live.
I record it all in Cubasis.
I have Auria and will eventually use it. Just never made the time.
Awesome. Thanks, @RustiK.
Sounds like a solid workflow. What do you mean by "an app which would allow to resynch recorded loops and samples together"? Resync to what?
It's what I miss the most on iOS right now : an app where you can play your loops together and slip them on the left or the right to resynch them together. You see... When you sample a loop on a record, sometimes even if looping perfectly it does not start exactly where it should to be synched with a drum loop you already made or with your music app metronome... This make things really hard as it is hard to cut a piece at the end or beginning of a loop and paste it on the other hand praying that corrected the synch issue... Almost mever work and make you loose hours of work...
I dreamed Blocs Wave would finally allow me to do it (it feels like it could be the savior I'm waiting for for years now, but it is missing a little function making it useless to me... so frustrating)
Gotcha. Beatmaker allows you to adjust the in and out points, no? Sample a little extra on either side of the 'perfect loop' and adjust from there? Also, Loopy doesn't do loop trimming but it does let you slip them in either direction by holding two fingers down and rotating. Not perfect because the loops are small so it can be hard to move it 'just right' but it works pretty well.
im still hoping for a piano roll where you can see and edit every instrument at once in one view, each instrument a different color of note. To add or subtract an instrument, you just select appropriate color. You can change which notes are given to which instruments just by changing their color. MIDI out of course and some basic built in sounds. I've looked all over, including desktop, for sometHing so simple like this and all I find are a bunch of halfway there's or tedious workarounds. It seems so obvious to me that this would be an incredibly efficient way to compose an arrangement am I crazy?
Samplitude on pc lets you display and edit notes from multiple midi clips at once in a fashion that sounds like this.
@AudioGus thanks! I don't think I looked into that one, will do.
How long are the loops you want to resync?
Matt said he'd planned to implement that in NS-1 but never got to it. Maybe it will land in NS2. I can't remember which desktop daw I used to use that did this but it had other MIDI tracks on the left that you could toggle on and off. Made it easy to focus on one thing while also making it easy to see it in relation to one or more other tracks. Might be Logic actually. Or Pro Tools? Been a while.
Thx for the reply man.
It's not possible to use extra sampling at the beginning or end of a loop sometimes when sampling a record... and that's almost always the case when you need resynch...
Tried Loopy several times, but it was not very good on the import/export side (kind of complicated) and it had the issue if being destructive when modifying the pitch (even when going back to initial pitch)... but I'm looking forward to Loopy ME/3...
I really hope I'll finally find an all in one sample/loop editor soon... It would be amazing... who knows, we got so close with BW and BM3 is also coming soon...
I'd say between 5 and 30 secs most of the time...
And I can resynch already, but it's a PITA... I hope we'll finally a tool as intuitive and creative as BW with the option to slip-roll/wrap as in Loopy HD soon... I keep the faith ;-).
If there's no extra sample before the start (or after the end), what are you slipping into/out of? Silence? Timestretching?
NanoStudio's Eden let's you freely adujst the sample start time but Eden is mono only. You can use two Eden instances to recreate the stereo sample but that sounds like more than a PITA than whatever you're doing now.
Ha ha... I guess it's hard to understand when you're not into hip ho beatmaking and old recod sampling... Seems so obvious to me.
Example :
Say you have an old soul record with a nice redundant melodic phrase that I will represent 'aaaabbbbccccdddd' and you want to make a loop of it with only instruments... As there are singers on it and they sing out of a chorus on the beginning of your loop, you may need to sample your loop this way : 'aaabbbbccccdddda'... It loops perfectly but when you want to use it with other loop you need to be able to make it 'aaaabbbbccccdddd' again... That's where a slip-wrap/roll (à la Loopy) would be fantastic (and should be mandatory lol) in every loop based music tool/app ;-)
I like it.
I always create patterns where the "start of the line" isn't on the one,
so I just record 2 bars to get the one bar with the "right" start ...
lol not all sequencers allow you to shift the pattern fwrd/bckwrd in a loop so this is a workaround ...
I gotcha. You want to be able to set In, Out and Start points like on the old Akai S-samplers. So, (using "X" as a marker here) your In and Out define:
XaaabbbbccccddddaX
but your Start isaaabbbbccccddddXa
. I don't really sample loops any more so I'm genuinely surprised to hear Beatmaker or iMPC don't offer that. You can do that in Nanostudio's Eden. You load the loopaaabbbbccccdddda
and set the start point (for key down) where ever you like and it will loop from there. Again though, mono only. Could just use two samples, one for the downbeat, one for the rest like Prince Paul used to do.Yes but I still think it would be better to have a slip-roll/wrap functionnality (not moving the start point on the loop but moving the loop to match the start point... don't know if I'm clear here). This would then ease the chopping/slicing process...
In fact, I want BeatMaker 2 (or BW) and Loopy HD to have a baby... one day, maybe, my dream will come true... BM3 is supposed to be released soon, we'll see (but it's frustrating because Blocs Wave was so so so close...).
