btw I recently found it totally inconventient to record a guitar performance by an IOS device (internal mic) mounted to a mic stand - in whatever direction you turn it... it's always the wrong one...

the exact same thing happened to me as well. That useless purchase is now rotting away in my box of unused equipment. I got a cheap tripod instead.

  • well, in my case it's not that bad...
The iPad is mounted to the mic stand for record control (using an interface and mics).
But in this case I wanted to check the internal microphone with proper direction adjustment etc (the mic is actually quite decent, when a bit of post-pro is added).
Would be great for quick/spontaneous capturing, but handling kills the fun.

Seems to me like MIDI control is overkill for the one person/one camera set up.

And using a second ios device to control the first one using propriatary technology that needs several button presses on each device to setup every time is not?

Why not something like 'Hey Siri, do another take?'. I'm sure there are 400 existing video capture apps out there and at least one of them would be be interested in implementing a request for voice control (siri need not apply).

More like: "Hey Siri, do another take! Oh, and while you're at it, could you tell other Siri on the other computer to tell Reaper to start recording?.... NO, Siri on the Mac, I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to Siri on the iphone. Please, Siri 1 and 2, stop talking all at the same time!!!"

I just love this new and improved world where Smart devices make everything sooooo easy as long as you don't try to do anything AppleGoogleMicrosoft hasn't thought of before. In my case, that would be..., uh, about 99% of what I do with computers.

But I think I will ask some of the video app developers if they have heard of this new technology called MIDI that is much simpler and much faster and much more flexible than Siri. Let's see how that goes.

Once you're rolling your new take, make a short, loud click sound with yer tongue and just line up the peaks from your 'good' audio with your camera audio like it's 1934. :)

    But it's 2016 :/

Has anyone ever told you that you are very very gracious, charming even, when asking for help?

Ok, voice control blows. No doubt. But MIDI? QWERTY control to 'dump current take and start a new one' seems to me like it would have much wider appeal. Guess it would take two keyboards in your case, now that you've introduced Reaper into the equation.

I guess I'm also not understanding the problem with simply continuing to record and dumping the false starts afterward?

Is it possible to use the iPhone camera to record video directly into the computer? If so, maybe you can find something that has a 'dump current take' command available via keyboard shortcut and then use a MIDI to QWERTY converter to issue the command from your... pedal? I dunno, you didn't say. You could bind reaper's rerecord to the same command (MIDI or QWERTY).

    No, but thank you!

I'm sure bluetooth keyboard control would have a much wider appeal. But not even that exists beyond the simple shutter control when pressing volume up. And it would still be inferiour. As you write, it would take two keyboards to do what I'd like to do and there wouldn't be a way to synchronize the two machines. Also, I would have a guitar in my hands and for guitarists and other people who do activities that don't involve sitting in front of a desk, keyboards are not very convenient to operate. That's why we love foot pedals.

I guess I'm also not understanding the problem with simply continuing to record and dumping the false starts afterward?

Of course, it's possible to do it the old way. Many people are doing it this way. My whole point is to suggest a way that would make it less painful.

No. At least not in acceptable quality. I've done hours and hours of research on the topic before posting about it on a public forum.
