Figure and Samplr on 12.9 Big Boy
Getting close to pulling the trigger on my first ios device, either pro 9.7 or 12.9
I "figure" that apps like Rebirth or a DAW must really benefit from the larger screen, but wonder if there are any downsides when it comes to other apps like Figure or Samplr, or if there are any other apps where you all find apps are too "blown up" if that makes any sense ?
Comments
Aside from a few iPhone only apps, I've never had any issues with apps scaling poorly on the big screen.
I have a lot of apps (too many but not enough etc.) and all I can really say about the Big Boy is that since his arrival I haven't touched my Air once.
^^Same exact scenario
Can you please call it something other than "Big Boy"? Like "Fat Bastard" or "Kong" or even "The Big Kahuna?"
"Big Boy" sounds... well... like you're into really big cuddly dudes.
Seriously, I don't care what you call it, but I'm curious about the weight. I've found that over hours of use, even the "Air 2" gets heavy and mucks up my elbow if I hold it like a clipboard. Been trying remember to put it up on a stand or something.
Does the "Fat Bastard" feel significantly heavier to hold than the Air 2?
Skip, I went from the Air 1 to the Fat Bastard and yes, it is heavier as you would expect given the size gain. FWIW, I always have my iPads in an Otterbox Defender case, whose cover/lid gives you a good two-position stand. Super easy to rest it on your lap, and it also has a slot for the Apple Pencil, which I'm loving for photo processing work, and is great to nail those small controls in Auria Pro.
Cheers!
Sorry Skip, not prepared to take my tongue out of the Big Boy cheek on this one, but, just so you know, I think of him more like this than anything else (in terms of device comparison):
As for weight, I find using the Apple keyboard thingie just fine as a knee/balance support (and a nice addition; I was against it, but I love the thing now, especially because it doesn't ever require charging...).
@sch yeah, I've been forcing myself to make sure it's on the case's stand and a lap table or something.
Must be a sign of getting old, ie. getting "tennis elbow" from holding a freakin' mobile device too long.
@JG, I've got an extra keyboard... haven't gone that route yet, but it's awfully mo' nice for longer passages.
the only problem right now with the 12.9 iPad is apps not supporting the larger screen. The blown up apps you talk about. It's not about the screen, it's about the the developers not adding the basic compatibility so the app look blown up and weird. Still usable of course but in some cases, like figure, completely ridiculous as it makes everything gigantic. Thankfully some other apps have gone the extra mile and beside supporting the screen size make an special UI for the larger iPad Pro. Those are are a joy to use.
It's my favorite device right now, in time more apps will support the screen resolution and as I said before only a few apps are really weird to use but these are not really supporting the big iPad so everything looks super huge.
Can't say I've had a problem with any of them, but might be my failing eyesight?
As I said it's only a few apps I find impractical to work with. Most of them are "fine"as they are but I think it's still important for apps to explicitly support the big screen. Some apps don't, others do but not really take advantage of the screen besides a few minor things and others really take advantage of the extra space completely changing the way you use the app.
Every app can work on the big screen, the thing is that right now not many apps are really doing anything with the extra space or only doing the very basic (which at least it's something, in fact sometimes that's enough)
For example two contrasting apps:
Figure doesn't work for me. Everything it's gigantic. It's clearly an app for iPhone, the UI could be so much better. Even on a regular iPad there's so much wasted space on a 13 inch screen it's even worse (And it's extra worse because it's not officially supporting the large screen, as blown up as it can get)
On the other hand GarageBand it's the best version of The software in my opinion (beating Mac, iPhone, regular iPad and iPad mini) a real pleasure to use.
Finally the 13 inch iPad has the best version of the iOS keyboard, at least for that apps need to really support the large screen. A truly functional keyboard,
Better than calling it "Pro"

Thanks for all of the feedback; do you all think that eventually we will be able to run theses apps in split-screen mode? Then at least something like Figure would be sized like on the 9.7 ipad.
I don't have a 12.9 or much money at all.
I was thinking though, I would donate a couple of quid towards a charity fund to help get Doug of the SoundTestRoom one. It would help with his eyesite problems
Big boy is fine, calling the smaller devices twink(s) is a different story, my heterosexual friend
Here are a number of stereotypes
It's bear, punk, trans, scruffy/otter, twink, jock
No big boy in here, don't mess with cultures you don't understand
Po to the nth power and with shiny little bells on
Oh no you didn't!
There's a whole gang of "bears" who hang at the Starbucks near me. And, none of them are anywhere near as fit as that "chapped" chap far left. lol
I didn't do what? ^^
I'm just killing time because bad boy didn't show up
You mean your big-bad-boy iPad didn't show up?
Not exactly
Ha! Ok, gonna have to take "po" on this before I make even bigger "bear" fool of myself. lol
It's a nice day here in Austin too. A friend just let me know he's available to help me install a fresh battery and front tire on my motorcycle. I'm gonna take this "po" as a perfect opportunity to get the frig off this insidious interweb dark void of time suckage and go get a little sunshine. Toodles!
To bad, huh?
Have fun.
My point was to show that big boy is different from bad boy.
If your mom called you a big boy she didn't try to pick you up.
What's the start of a pick up line:
a) hey big boy, did u do the shopping?
b)hey bad boy, let's get nasty!
Hey big boy let's get nasty sounds weird in a 50s kind of way ...
See what I mean?
Why do I have to explain this to you? You seamed to be sensitive to words with subtext.
Not really that sensitive. Just havin' fun. And, every time one of these folks refer to their "Big Boy", I kept seeing Ginger Rogers saying, "Hey Big Boy, why don't ya come up and see me some time."
And nerdy, appaholic grown men and women fondling their beefy "Big Boy"... well, wasn't wild about the image. But that's on me. Call it whatever you like. I'm leaning more toward the 9.7in Pro anyway. But, waiting to see if something is about to get announced before the holidays since they've been discounting the Air 2's heavily lately.
