Used iPad Pro - the time is ripe

So I convinced myself the time is ripe for pulling the trigger on a used 12.9 iPad on eBay. I figure every device still has at least a few weeks of AppleCare left, even if it was originally purchased on release day Nov 11 2015. I can take it up to Apple Store if it gives me any trouble, right?

It's in the mail, can't wait to see that giant screen and 4GB ram :# :o

Comments

  • I'm jealous. Have fun and let us know how it goes.

  • Also, 12.9 refurbs are now available from Apple.com in the US. If you want a deal, but not ready to risk a used item, that's a great option.

Also the speakers, which I don't see mentioned all that often. They sound fantastic*. Particularly in landscape orientation.

    (*all things considered)

Re: the speakers... I had not even thought of that! I've been enamored with my discovery of good earbuds for a few years. But yes, there are times that good device speakers are useful

You'll be pleasantly surprised I believe.....they are loud and proud! Also, the single most important accessory to get if you plan on heavy use is the 29W USB-C power adapter. It takes an ungodly amount of time to charge the 12.9 using the standard adapter. I"m talking like overnight charging still won't take it from 5% to 100%. But with the 29W adapter it'll charge incredibly fast.

  • The speakers are pretty decent and loud for a tablet, and it's stereo which is nice. I wish they had 256GB available when I got mine. I'm down to 1GB available on my 128GB :|

  • I have the 32GB and constantly need to be verrrrry organized.

I've got the 256 and my room's still a mess. The extra space was lovely for a few months, but it was soon filled up and now I've got so much rubbish everywhere I can't tell my socks from my shoes. I bet you know where your 32 are far more precisely than any of my 32s....

Instead of the Apple 29W PSU, if you're in the UK, look at the Maplin N41EE - this is a USB-C power supply unit that has even higher PD profiles, for the same price. Probably should work fine on the Pro.

[edit] oh wait, it terminates in a captive USB-C cable and plug, so you'd need some way of going from that to the quaint lightning port on the iPad. Never mind, then.

You must be doing lots of video work to fill 256. My 64 still feels like a cavern.

Guilty. But I also find it hard to trim or delete apps. Somehow I'm still old-fashioned enough to want to see most of the apps I have (just in case...). It should also be said that I still have close to 25,000 7" singles in a loft in Chiswick...

  • I have a 64 gig air 2, and I just send projects to dropbox once I'm done with them. I also do clean up apps - they're easy to get back if you want them.

  • I'm curious how the smaller pro compares with the larger one. It doesn't have the extra memory, wondering how the speakers sound on it. I have my work allowance for new devices to spend, so I'm looking at upgrading. I'm just not sure how much of an upgrade it is from an Air 2 to a pro 9.7. I don't want the larger iPad, happy with the form size of the smaller one.

Do you reckon I can swap my ipad 2 16g and my ipad mini3 w/retina 32g for a newer device without paying anything out of pocket?

And, as a busy new dad for one year now, aside from time, I've also given-up the real-estate that i used to have for complicated setups involving multiple units. So, with initial trepidation, I've happily grown accustomed to using just one ipad, decent cans, and my quenexus.

Also, I've completely lost track of the different ipad generation models, and where do the pro line fit in?

  • @Blipsford_Baubie

    iPad 2 - maybe get $100

iPad mini - maybe get $200

iPad Pro - will cost at least $600 on eBay. So no, you won't probably have costs covered even if you sell both other devices.

  • @Hmtx
Thanks. Outta curiosity, those prices that you just quoted; is that was you been seeing on ebay for 2s and minis? Or are they Apple trade-in prices?

Also, the best of luck to you.

Yup. Long one too. Of course. Involving a bet and a broken heart.

  • That's my guess on eBay prices right now. I don't think Apple would even pay that much.

  • One other thing about Big Boy which I've only just gotten into but makes a huge difference is the split screen. I just hadn't bothered, but tonight had lyrics up on simplenote and was running a mix in AS at the same time, working on the lyrics while watching the tune go by. A blessing to be able to edit words/syllables in real time on loop...helped a lot.

^ The feature which draws me.

I'd very much like to come to Austin and here the story behind 25,000 7" singles. Though maybe I'd prefer a trip to London (that Chiswick?) to flip through the boxes while I hear it.

Since neither of those are likely to happen, I'd be quite happy to read said story here.

Look how much forum news I can see on one page!!!!!!!

[real testing will happen on the weekend, very excited]

And actually, it is surprising how much better web pages are on this screen. Both Safari and Chrome are a much better experience.
