I ended up with both versions and the iPhone version may actually be preferred for iPad Mini since the setting selector on the iPad version is very tiny. They seem functionally similar.
No, not terribly complicated but very inviting and after watching the video I was having fun with it right away. No complaints for a free app (and my attempts at Launchpad finger drumming demonstrated I can use some rhythm practice).
{For future reference, if anyone is considering spending money my "paid app complaints" would be 1) only eighth note resolution is limiting (hard to get funky without sixteenths) , and 2) the tempo can only be changed by changing the background loop from which you can select from 60 to 140 BPM in five-beat increments -- with a few oddball BPMS like 96, 118 and 126 thrown in.}
