Best bet on iOS drum app to fudge up a CR78?

Was listening/watching this Radiohead tune and wondered what might get me close to this (drum) sound?

  • It has a CR78 :)

  • If those solutions don't do it for ya, check your pms for a good sample set.

  • I reckon Patterning has one. Plus, you know...Patterning.

  • It depends on how much you want to fudge it up. Sector comes to mind...

Here is a loop I recently made for someone else as a "proof of concept" using a CR78 emulation plug-in. The actual CR78 is a vintage drum machine.

I haven't done it with this loop, but have a go at it in Sector. Note: this is a dry loop with no FX or mastering.

  • Thanks very much to all of you. Gives me plenty to bang away with.

    Thanks again for this/these.

Yes, FunkBox Drum Machine has the CR78.

Odd. I don't even think of Patterning as a drum machine, it's, erm, just a thing unto itself....patterning.

Couldn't get at this one. Maybe the session expired? Thanks all the same.

Lots of folks love the funkbox. Never really gave it a run. I should.

I don't own it. It's on my nice to have, but don't need it list. @syrupcore is a fan. I just noticed it had the CR-78 emulation.

Really? I tried with a different browser and it worked for me.

Would anyone else be kind enough to try this link? It's just a couple of drum loops.

    Anything goes
As long as you can transpose filter and envelope things
I can't watch the video in Germany so I can't tell what's going on

It's a little, intimate live jam with Thom & Jonny of Radiohead performing "Present Tense" w/ a CR78.

  • No Surprises: definitely Funkbox. Great CR-78 sample set. Fast set of mix controls. It doesn't have a full song mode but you can set up a set of contiguous patterns and then press the first and the last at the same time and will play them all in a row (and loop). This sounds like 3 of the same main pattern and then one fill pattern would cover the entire thing.

PS. Beautiful video/performance. Some of my favorite Radiohead moments are just the two of them together. There's a duo performance of House of Cards that just kills me.

PPS. Just suggested you employ the wonders of Funkbox's CR78 in the Alina thread!

    DM1

Yes there is a good cr-78 in DM1 too in the vintage Classic drum kits ...

  • If all you're after is that bass drum and hi hat sound to use in a song of yours, it shouldn't be too tricky to knock a basic pattern out, or use one of the Signature drum patterns in Cubasis. Whilst in Cubasis, to try to get that empty, aching type bass drum sound try the "Early Reflection" effect. You loose a bit of the punch but that's the point. Then whack the whole lot through Stereo Designer on "Wide 3" preset. Appears to separate the beat so you get the main thwack in your right ear and a lesser thwack, just after in the left. I am awaiting a hearing test though so that could be reason it sounds so damn fine to me only. ;)

  • A number of the synth models in Ruismaker were based on the Cr78 designs, so if you prefer analog modelling over samples you could have a listen. (Disclaimer: they are not 100% emulations, but models inspired by the Cr78 circuit designs).

OT: I wish Roland would add a CR78 model to their TR-8... that would be the bomb-shiznitz. The 78 is a lot more distinct and iconic than the 606 they recently added...

I think that might push me over the 'buy' edge on the TR8. I looooove those sounds. I just bought a gen-you-wine 707 though so maybe not immediately over the buy edge. :)

I can't believe I didn't get any credit (or groans) for this:

    Call the Karma Police.

  • If I can't get props or groans for replying in kind from the same album, there really is no hope for these geezers. :D

  • Well, just looking at your icon it's obvious your Paranoid.
This thread, by the way, made me revisit DM1. That's a really good drum machine. Very versatile.

There there, no need to prove yourself. Sorry you felt let down, but there's no need to sulk, just look me at me, I may be in my iron lung but I still feel lucky, despite it all I'm fitter happier than ever. What do you reckoner? Always better to meet the morning bell with everything in its right place than to end up high and dry hunting bears...(Sorry, don't mean to be creep).

So much for one-upsmanship. JG went full tilt and shut 'er down.

    EDIT: Happy now, @syrupcore?
