New to this and need info. Please help!

Hi there. I just recently got into the world of music production via iOS apps and have used the latest version of Garageband (which includes the live looper function) as my all in one DAW. The app includes filter effects that can be applied in real-time to your tracks for recording and live performances purposes, I'm sure some of you are already familiar. But of course, there are limitations within the application and that's what brought me to researching alternative apps such as Audiobus. In Garageband, there is no ability to apply real-time effects to specific tracks, ONLY the master track. Since the primary feature of this application is to integrate multiple apps together allowing the user to apply effects to tracks from certain apps, I'm assuming the same function would not apply within a single app if that app isn't capable of bussing. I hope I'm making sense so far, not used to speaking in this vernacular honestly. So I suppose my question is this: would it make sense to start using other apps for certain tracks, like drum tracks for example, and then have my other tracks from Garageband bussed separately so that the effects that I apply will only apply to the tracks running from Garageband while the drum tracks are bussed separately from another app? If so, what other apps would anyone suggest for a separate drum machine that can be tempo synched to other apps in real time? Thanks.

  • Welcome! GarageBand is great, but it does have its limitations. Here is a recent thread on the subject:

Yes, I'm having a little trouble following you. Maybe some paragraph breaks next time? ;)

I suggest getting proficient with GB until you understand what the limitations are, and what needs of yours aren't being met. But if you're just looking for 3rd party effects and drum machines that work with GB, we can probably help.

  • Look into IAA (inter app audio), AU (audio units), ableton link, and Audiobus compatibility for any app in question. Once you know what those are, it will become more clear what can and can't be done and what's good for what. Also check out musicappblog.com, they have a phenomenal "getting started" section for iOS music as well as in depth app reviews. We like that website a lot.

  • Check YouTube videos, for all kinds of apps. Doug of the TheSoundTestRoom channel has hundreds of iOS music app videos. Here's one with Garage-band
