Launchpad type Effects for Live Looping

i'm working on live Looping with a goal of doing it in a performance context. After "auditioning" various MIDI and audio Looping apps, I'm currently settled on "Group the Loop".

What I would like to add to the mix is some dj-style effects like Launchpad has that would allow them to be applied to the loops created live, via MIDI controller.

I have folders full of FX apps, including Sugar Bytes big 3, but Nothing dumbed down that can take audio input, as opposed to requiring loading it into a pad, and apply tempo synced stutter, filter, delay type FX.

Any suggestions?

  • Thanks @telecharge I've followed those threads, but they a foucused primarily on the launching of clips, which I have worked out.

The hole I'm trying to fill is around Effects applied to the clips. Something like DJDJ would work if it would allow being used in the effect slot in AUM or AB, But it requires that you load an audio file, which won't work with live looping.

  • I don't own Group The Loop, so sorry if I'm being dense. I need to understand what GTL, Audiobus, and your AB compatible FX apps aren't doing for you.

Also, so we don't overlook the obvious, have you tried DJ apps like Traktor DJ, Cross DJ Pro, or djay 2?

  • What's been the issue with using either Turnado or Effectrix via AUM?

No need to apologize @telecharge , I appreciate the suggestions. For the purposes of this discussion, the fact that I'm working with loops isn't that important. The desired FX app would be able to accepts audio stream input, like Turnado or Effectrix and have options to apply this DJ style effects to them. Simply, like launchpad does, At the pres/hold of a button(s).

I'm not familiar with Cross DJ or Djay 2. I'll give 'em a look. Thanks!

Maybe I need to dig deeper, but I don't think either can be set up to work like Launchpad Effects. One button per effect/beat division.

If this can be used in an Effects slot and supports MIDI, it will be perfect. Digging deeper....thanks!

  • Maybe check that DJ fx app called RMX- 1000, I don't have this but if I remember correctly it syncs bpm just by listening to the audio input and it has AB and IAA support.

Yeah, that's the right idea, but unfortunately no midi support mentioned, and It doesn't appear to have Link, or anyway to sync with the beat of external apps.

I'm not 100% sure but I think it determines the bpm by listening to the input audio.

One of the sugarbytes apps really should be able to do this.

Turnado has an insane level of MIDI control so you should be able to make an interface in a MIDI controller app that makes Turnado do exactly what you are going for.

I haven't tried it like this for a while in practice but Turnado has midi learn, Link and accepts midi program changes so maybe something can be set up to send multiple cc messages from some pads in Lemur for example.

edit: in fact if you set the xy pads to reset to zero on release than you have this functionality in the app and more control than one button. So with a Lemur template you could have 8 xy pads which could do the same thing for each effect.

  • I would highly recommend turnado since I use it for this exact use case in my live setup. I have 8 Linked (thx, Sugarbytes!) effects mapped to the 8 knobs on my Korg nanokontrol studio over bluetooth. Does just what you describe!

Thanks @lukesleepwalker , it looks like I need to get better acquitted with Turnado. Cheers!

  • +1 for spring loaded Turnado. That'll only effect a single audio signal though. Not sure if GTL supports multiple outputs but if it does and you need more effect paths, you could use AUM (or AB3 whenever it lands) with additional effects loaded and MIDI learn the mutes or send controls.

On that note, you can make stuttery type effects out of quite a lot of different effects if they have MIDI learn by point the app midiLFOs at whatever controls you like.
