I want a second Ipad

edited October 2016 in General App Discussion

Hi,

I have been a standard music maker more in the rock side, you know, recording drums, bass, one guitar , a second a third one, voices etc...All recorded in sequence in Cubasis or before that in Garage band in my Mac.

Since I got into incredible IOS app world I have found out an incredible amount of Apps : clip launchers, sequencers, synths, loopers, etc that allow me to create songs live with full richness . On the other side am finding myself switching from app to app in my sessions that is uncomfortable and some times creates some glitches ( ok, sometimes too many apps opened...).

My idea would be to have a second Ipad mainly for Launchpad on the foreground and maybe to support to my main Ipad (Air 2 128 gb) from sequences to synths I am sending with Genome.

My question would then be: what would be a good second Ipad to perform these secondary tasks. I was initially thinking to go cheap with an Ipad 2 but I believe this will be outdated soon. Next was to think on a Air 1 with 32 Gb . I believe this one could do comfortably the work now and wouldnt be outdated soon at least for these secondary tasks.

What do you think?

  • I would like a second ipad as well. I wouldn't go below 64gb. I have 64gb, and I wish I woulda went with a 128gb. Projects in Auria can sure fill up a lot of space!

I didn't think my air1 would be outdated so quickly, but I kinda feel like it is getting there. It still works extremely well, but it still feels a bit like it's beginning to feel left behind.

  • I still use my 1st gen iPad in an Alesis IO Dock with no problems other than it is stuck in time. No more updates except any packs bought for apps can be added. I would think an iPad Air would last you quite a few years with no probs.

    Hi,

The idea is just to use it for few apps and not for recording in it. Tracks from this 2nd Ipad would be going to the main one where I should have enough storage ( and two mic ins with an Alesis IO dock).

My Mac would be the Hub where to store unneeded files.

  • The iPad 2 wont be outdated soon. It's outdated right now. The air 1 is the way to go.

  • No problems here on an air 1 and would think it would do fine. Personally I would go for 128 gb. but less may well work for you.

  • Someone local on Craigslist is selling an Air for $150 but it's only 16gb. I was real tempted but the space will probably be an issue real quickly.

Hi 16 Gb is a clear no go. Even you never include any non music side app or any photos this will become a nightmare in few weeks. Ideally I would search for 64gb but I believe 32 for just few apps and some loops would work, not perfect, but work for me.

I disagree on size limitation. Any size iPad can be put to use. It would make a great secondary MIDI controller at the very least.

And if you just want to load up a second instance of any synth, you don't need loads of space. I would pick up 2 16gb minis rather than save up for a secondary high storage device. I guess it depends on your planned usage. Sample-based synths would obviously need more than Sunrizer, Animoog, synthesis.

[edit: sorry, I just re-read the OP, I see why you might want more ]

  • +1 to the 32G(or more) Air 1.

I use an Air 1 as my primary and an iPad 3 as my secondary now. I never really have any issues with the air 1 that I can't blame on a specific app or user error. :) The iPad 3 still works great for apps that were out back when it was released like Loopy/Thumbjam/Sunrizer/Animoog... many others run without a hiccup. Just can't run many at once. Still, I wouldn't recommend paying for one today (unless it was ~50 bucks and you were sure it could run the Launchpad app satisfactorily).
