Does any of you work with an old IPad2? which IOS?

I have an old Ipad 2 ...with IOS 7...til here i never had any performance issues...mostly i use Touchable, Animoog , Drumjam and Chordion...
together with ableton...
They say never change something that works but i am really curious about ableton link and also some of the newest app requires IOS 8 at least too (like Patterning)...
So i am in doubt about upgrading IOS at the moment , i dont want to go all the way up to IOS 10 , i know a way to install IOS 8....
Is there anybody out there with an Ipad 2 and IOS 8 or superior? what are your experiences about ? too slow?

ah and do not suggest to buy a new ipad cause i have got no money at the moment... :-(

  • I passed my iPad 2 onto Monzo Jnr (when he behaves, which isn't often), but like you held off from updating so that's still on7x. From what I've read 8x was a bummer, with 9x bringing some improvements. I think you're stuck with 10x now though if you want to upgrade. Be interested to know what you find, as the lack of available apps is a bit of an issue on 7x.

  • I always update as soon as available but I'm thinking of selling the iPad 2 before it becomes too old. The trouble is, it has a fault on the sim reader which makes it think there's no sim in there, but upon power up it'll recognise it, just not often after that time. Not sure if that'll affect the value, I rarely used the sim facility, was too expensive.

  • Pretty sure ios9 is as far as iPad 2 will go.

    Yup.

I still have an iPad 2, but I rarely use it anymore. I kept it on iOS 7.

Ableton Link is pretty nifty, but not worth upgrading for unless you really want to tempo sync Ableton Link enabled apps. Not sure how many of those you own or would be able to run.

I could see making a case for upgrading just to get Patterning, but I'm not sure how well it performs on an iPad 2 running iOS 9.

iOS 9 it's literally as far as the iPad 2 will go, no iOS 10 update for it. Funnily enough I think some iPad 2 owners don't now about it because they are so concern with performance they have avoid looking in to updating past 9 (or 7, or 8)

  • I know we are getting a bit off topic here, but does anybody know if i can try update and then somehow revert to IOS 7 , if it is too slow?

If you somehow have access to an older, signed version of iOS, it is possible. See this:

I suppose if you jailbreak your iPad and are able to image it, that could work, but is it really worth the hassle?

  • The basic rule on iPad 2 is: use anything but iOS 9. It slows the device to unusable.

I couldn't revert my iPad3. And I deeply regret upgrading. Ableton Link is kinda pointless when the device cannot run more than 1 app properly after upgrading to iOS 9.
It's only really worth it if you have multiple iDevices. Even gadget can barely run 4 synths while before in ios7 it could run 8-9. It's literally a 50% decrease in performance for me.

  • All right you guys convinced me...i will keep things as they are....wait til the moment i can afford a new pad....
    thanks

  • I still use an iPad 2 & mini, which basically is the same thing. I only use NanoStudio, Caustic & Samplr.. Both running ios7.. The perks of being locked in are you get to focus on making music instead of lusting for new apps.

  • I went as far as 8.3 on my iPad2 but haven't "upgraded" to 9.x yet. I went to 8.3 because many of the apps I wanted to use required it including Patterning. Unfortunately I've found that most of those more modern apps are virtually unusable unless I use them quickly to generate sounds into a recorded file and then quit them. Patterning is a great example -- it works well enough by itself or with just one other lightweight recording app but completely bogs down when paired with any other app. It is even getting boggy now with Loopy.

I've just about reached the point where I'm feeling that the end of life for my iPad2 is here. It works well enough for web browsing but music making is becoming a bit of a hassle. I kind of wished I stayed on 7.x because even browsing is becoming slower -- e.g. the amount of time it takes the keyboard to come up and keypresses to be acknowledged.

  • 9 pretty much snafu'd my ipad2. Still usuable but everything was slowed right down after the update :/
