Heavy Brass got an update!

Welcome and long overdue. Seven new free solo instruments and a lot of fixes. No AU yet.

  • Cool. Like this app, but really needs a decent external keyboard to get the most out of it.

  • An interesting app. I don’t own it. The developer should make a video or two as a demo of sounds and to show it in action. I watched the soundtestroom video — just a little noodling with an as yet unreleased version. Odd to me that so much apparent work goes into making an app, yet the selling of it gets little attention.

  • Wicked update! I love sending it midi from Modstep then manually selecting between various singles, switches and combis on the fly while recording and slicing the results in Blocs.

  • I love Heavy Brass: I already used it in a few songs to great effect. It's very realistic!

    Here is one:

  • brilliant app imho. this track has Heavy Brass, iFretlessSax,iM1,Drumjam all played in realtime viaTC-Data.

Keen to hear what someone has made with HeavyBrass. When I bough it, I was quite impressed at first. But I think... And I might be wrong here unlike a synth, I find it hard to add dynamics to this when playing.

--brass is such a direct instrument (or at least, in the samples presented here). So strong, that I find it doesn't take too long before you statlrt tiring of the sound. Its a bit like -- a violin??? - as in if you play it badly, it can sound hurrendous.

No don't get me wrong, I do like the app, the sounds are the best samples of brass I've heard on iOS but maybe my approach is wrong...

Sidenote, I actually tend to use my hardware volume knob on my keyboard to make dynamics. --the crescendo preset in the app is good but of course the length of crescendo is SET for each key and often, I need something that varies.

  • Thanks, guys. Sounds good.

  • I have ownde dthis app for a while, liked the sound initially, then deleted it to get space back. It is now back on my ipad and I feel i need to spend more time with it to learn how to play it to get what I'm after, it all sounds very fixed and sampled to me at the moment as I'm just sending sequenced loops to it.

Anybody got any more tips on playing style for this ?.

Yah i feel it is a midi triggered sample library for the most part.

  • A great MIDI sample library, at least!

You really need an external keyboard to play with one hand, while you switch the switches with your other hand. You need to get the velocity curve just right for your playing style. Then it's just learning some technique of when to use each of the different velocity switches.

You can also just midi the playing and set velocities that way. Maybe there is a way to midi automate the switching?

Cheers dude ! I hadn't realised the switching was so important, but now you say it, it is obvious.....DOH!

  • If they can add support for aftertouch, that would make it much more useful and realistic. Also, the use of the mod wheel is non standard from my experience. I originally thought it was for manual control of the aftertouch, but it is actually used for switching articulations. There are already so many sample libraries using "keyswitches", I don't understand the decision to use mod wheel for this. Not likely for them to change as they are well on their way down this path already.

  • Version: 2.0.6

This update fixes the following issues:

    • Fixed several issues with the graphical user interface (iOS 13).
    • Fixed issues with dark mode (iOS 13).
    • Audio Unit: Fixed several crashes when exporting / freezing a song.
    • Audio Unit: Fixed AU not being loaded with some DAW apps.
    • Inter-App Audio: Fixed crash when Inter-App Audio was disconnected.
    • Fixed several issues with Audiobus.
    • App States: Fixed MIDI device selection not being saved / restored.
    • App States: Fixed MIDI velocity curve setting not being saved / restored.
    • Virtual piano keyboard: Fixed black keys triggering notes with incorrect / inaccurate velocities.
    • Fixed seldom crash on (stand-alone) app start.
    • Fixed crash when opening tuning settings on app start.

Thanks for your feedback, and take care!

  • @theconnactic, very nicely done. And very different from what I have heard you create. Good to see you back. It has been quite a while, no?

  • anybody setup heavy brass with touchscaper? i bet that would be a excellent pairing

  • I was secretly hoping for better MIDI implementation to allow use of a breath controller. Apparently he’s had quite a few requests for it

It appears it has indeed been a while, I believe the post you are referring to is from 2016 ;)

  • @busker, lol, indeed. Still, what has happened to him?

  • I tried this app (no so much competition on iOS) and liked the sound.

But i struggle with MIDI: it reacts to other channels than the one selected, making the app unusable for me as I’m sending MIDI to other apps/channels at the same time.
That’s a pitty. The UI starts to age a bit as well and seen the dates of messages here, the support doesn’t seem to be well followed.

If it connects to Virtual MIDI or AudioBus, you might be able to rig something with AudioBus or AUM, and maybe MF Adapter. Then you could route only one MIDI Port to it and shield it from the other events.

Edit: I see that it supports AudioBus, so if you start it from AudioBus, it should see only AudioBus MIDI. So you could just create a MIDI lane and send it to the app.
