MODSTEP: Making the transition.........

So, after much time and half hearted attempts I am officially giving MODSTEP a go.

Quick couple of questions for those of you who know the app.

How do you get samples into the app?

What are the tricks or methods for the file system? What is it similar to as far as other apps or programs?

How do you get the modulation window off the main page? It comes up sometimes and won't go down. (thats what she said)

So, you still need to leave the app to trigger Launchpad or Blocs? Correct? (outside a physical launchpad itself)

Are there "sample packs" available for more instruments? Besides the factory ones.

What is the method or how to use the "templates" for other apps?

Please don't tell me to read the manual.

I am looking for community info and feedback.

Thanks in advance.

  • besides I think it's pretty lame you say "don't tell me to read the Manual" - because I did - I'll tell you what I know. Take note that I bough this 2 days ago and actually don't know much either:

    1 - Import samples:
You can put samples via Audioshare. Go to the Sampler and clip in the retangle with the name of the pad. It will open the Sample Kits browser and there is a AS Import.

2 - "Tricks or method for file system":
didn't get the question. you're talking about how the file format works internally?

3 - "Get the modulation windows off the main page?"
Well, the only modulation windows I found so far is accessible via the Piano Roll tab down the left corner with the MODS circle. So, my "main page" doesn't show a MOD window - btw, pretty chauvinist an unnecessary joke (:

4 - "You still need to leave the app to trigger Launchpad or Blocs?"
Correct, you can't trig launchpad or blocs outside it's app. And, actually, you can't trigger it even if you have a Novation gear. It will only work with the Launchpad APP (or Blocs, I believe) opened. What I do is map the others apps to my MIDI controller and just let Launchpad APP always open. You can use a internal MIDI controller as SideCar either.

5 - Are there "sample packs" available for more instruments?
I don't believe so, so far. But do not know for sure.

6 - What is the method or how to use the "templates" for other apps?
I didn't used it so far, but as I saw in tutorials, reviews and MANUAL(!!), is just "drag and drop" the template and it will be on. You can create and edit your own template too.

    7 - Go read the Manual. ;)

As I said, I'm new to MODSTEP too and some info may be wrong. Please, anyone can correct me if needed. I'm also have a lot of doubts about it.

  • I read the modSTEP manual even before I got the app so I would know what I was getting into.
The on-line manual is well worth the time it takes to read it and answers most questions...

You can manage files in several places depending on what you are doing, however you can get to all file import/export for audio and MIDI by pressing the file icon top right. Once you have the files in modstep you can use them in the sampler or midi into parts etc....

One thing that is not immediately obvious is that Buttons labelled AS are for AudioShare import export.

There are 4 buttons bottom left of the piano roll which will control whether you see scales, modulation etc...

You can use sample packs from other vendors by importing the individual sounds

For templates, you add them using the 4th icon from the top left, then just drag a template to the lower half of the screen, this will set up mappings for cc's and also placing some of these onto the mod controls (x y pads).

I would definitely recommend watching the Jakob Haq vids to get a basic grounding in modstep.

Is there any way to have a clip play its patterns in a random order?

  • Very generous answers above.

My general modstep advice: remember to try dragging and double tapping.

I just got a pop up window on the main screen showing cc's I'd just recorded via midi in, and then couldn't get rid of the window. @rustik is this the window you mentioned earlier ?
I don think I've seen this window before.

It is very easy to delete things by mistake. Of course if you read the manual you'd know that.

Very true, the delete is a bit awkward to start with, as is edit, but once you get used to it it works :)

You cannot use midi to trigger pads in blocs wave at all, and not in launchpad without launch hardware so you have to switch from modstep to do the input.
However, you can export loops from blocs and use them in file players in AUM which can, as I have been told on this forum, be triggered via midi from modstep or other midi source.

    whoops...wrong thread ;)

  • i had to read the manual even though the app felt familiar (like live's scene view), there's a few things that made it necessary like the modulation setup and step sequencer functions but the manuals's really well written.

Tip, read the preferences section as you can set a few useful default actions.

Question: what's the use of being able to route modstep to modstep in midi prefs?

Perhaps you can route midi out from one channel to the midi in of another, which would let you send the same midi to more than one device.
Or perhaps you could create a sequence to control the midi mapped controls in modstep ?

can you quote me that thread?! I've interest in that subject

    to the OP

    • keep in mind the difference between drum and melody tracks. If you have notes sequenced in a melody track and then switch it to a drum track, the notes will not show up, and vice versa.
    • always keep an eye on the edit functions at the top. If you have, say, copy enabled and don't remember to close it, then buttons you expect to work may not react, or other weirdness may happen. Delete is worse of course.
    • Turn off "load last session on startup". If a plugin crashes ModStep, it's possible to get into a continual reset situation. Turning this off will always start with a blank session. Modstep is way more stable than it used to be, but it's a worth the small inconvenience to be safe.
    • Most importantly, just try things out, then ask specific questions. It's way easier to answer specific questions than it is to guess what you do or don't get. It's a waste of time for people to put effort into typing out stuff that you may already understand. People here are very good about answering questions. At mind-reading, not so much.
    • Oh, and RTFM. B)

there's a newer preference setting called something like "momentary copy/paste/delete" which makes that menu behave more like the tools menu it seems to be instead of the vim-like 'meta mode' toggler it normally is.

    "meta mode"

Great name for a blues song mind you

This is some of what I was looking for.

I have experienced many of these scenarios.

We both use Novation gear so maybe it is something with the "incontrol" that is triggering it?
I don't know but if no one else has this issue WTF?

I've reported it to the ModStep folks..maybe there is a way of closing the window, maybe it is a bug.
I'm not sure if the Circuit has the same 'incontrol' as the launch range and I havent tried using any other hardware controllers with ModStep for a while.

  • ALWAYS read the manual AT LEAST twice.

Thanks for the reply! Pity though, I think this would be an interesting feature.

  • OT ,anyone with air 1 (cellular) iOS 9.3.5 here? I can't launch Modstep whatever I tried (uninstall / install ,soft/hard reset) .On my air 2 (which I just sold) it used to work fine :/

Have you got Tonebridge? If so uninstall it, it crashes Modstep
