Audio + midi looper?

  • Here's a good place to start, but ask if you have any questions.

  • There are great audio loopers (Loopy, group the loop, etc) and great MIDI loopers (Modstep, infinite looper). But nobody has put it all together yet. There are many of us looking forward to the release of Loopy 3, which is rumored to bridge the gap.

Very this. Can't wait for this.

  • Out of curiosity, other than Ableton, are there any desktop tools that fluidly allow for looping both?

I would have a hard time coming up with a desktop DAW that doesn't. Did you give Stagelight a spin?

I was beginning to consider to think about calling @Michael Joseph Mitchell or even (for a further layer of irony) Joe Gould...but only because I'm impatient...

    A masterpiece is never finished.

  • Patience is the master key to every situation. One must have sympathy for everything, surrender to everything, but at the same time remain patient and forbearing… There is no such thing as bending or breaking. It’s a question only of overcoming, which begins with overcoming oneself. That cannot be avoided. To abandon that path is always to break in pieces. One must patiently accept everything and let it grow within oneself. The barriers of the fear-ridden I can only be broken by love. One must, in the dead leaves that rustle around one, already see the young fresh green of spring, compose oneself in patience, and wait. Patience is the only true foundation on which to make one’s dreams come true. (Kafka)

I enjoyed reading that, thanks JG :)

That work as actual loopers? Obviously pretty much any desktop saw allows for loop recording of audio and MIDI but I'm talking about features common to loopers like sound on sound and MIDI control of stuff like new track, halve/double track length, reverse track, clear track...

Fairly positive Logic or Reaper could be coaxed into mimicking a lot of those sorts of features (via the Environment in logic or scripting in reaper) + MIDI Bindings but they don't ship with that stuff facing forward (like, say, Loopy or Live). I know of a good few dedicated loopers for desktop but can not off the top of my head think of any that do audio plus MIDI gracefully. I'm not really looking as Loopy 3 has all of my hopes. Just curious if other people have gone after the same. Sure there must be something.

That's why I answered with "DAW" when you asked for "tools." I was trying to better understand what you were looking for. You used Ableton as an example, so I wasn't sure.

Right, sorry. Since Ableton is very much a "loop as first class citizen" approach to a DAW, it has a lot of the same features facing forward has hardware loopers. To further clarify, I'm thinking about hardware live "capture and immediately loop/overdub" loopers (like Boss RC pedals or the JamMan) vs sample+edit+loop devices (like MPCs).

  • You can loop audio in modstep(using its sampler), but it needs to be recorded elsewhere and is kinda hassle to use. Id say get modstep for midi and blocs wave for audio.

  • Are we talking about live performance here? Can Blocs Wave really function as a live looper? I'm so ready for Loopy 3. And AB 3.

Coincidence that the next versions of Loopy and AB will both be identified as "3"? I'm hoping there will be synergy between the two that will make the pair more valuable to my workflow than the two apps separated! We need some sneak peeks, @Michael and @Sebastian !
