App for 80's Brass Synth?

Hey guys!
Long time lurker here and finally decided to create an account to ask some questions and contribute.
I play guitar as a hobby through my iPad Air and I have a few of the basic apps such as Bias FX, Garageband, Sampletank, Loopy HD, etc. Recently, I've acquired the desire to learn the keyboard/piano.
For my Birthday, my girlfriend got me a Novation Launchkey 61 to pair with my iTrack Dock Studio. This leads me to my question....

Can you guys recommend me an app with 80's style Brass synth sounds. ie. Final Countdown, Jump, Separate Ways. With all the vast amount of Synth apps available it's a bit overwhelming trying to decide.
Thanks in advance!

Also, here's just a quick demo I made in Garageband a few days ago just for fun.

Ipolysix ?Odyssey ? Phasemaker ? SampleTank ? Or record a sample of one of this song and play with it ?

  • Korg iM1 for the digital brass of the eighties

So many other apps for that emulated analog brass

    Don't forget StringEnsemble

Final Countdown was recorded with a Yamaha DX5 (or DX1, but almost sure it was the 5). So a FM Synth is the obvious choice, FM Essentials from Yamaha being the closest match (but if you choose FM Essentials, beware: you'll have to program it by yourself). Phasemaker is also a strong contender.

P.S.: there is this old app that supposedly simulates the Oberheim OB-X, which was used in "Jump". Worth checking it out: http://ipadloops.com/oberheim-ob-x-for-ipad/

EDIT: this app is no more.

Gotta say, I never imagined a trap beat could accomodate an electric guitar, but it kind of does.

As stated, iM1 and or the FM apps mentioned above would probably satisfy all 80's brass needs.

Actually, Final Countdown was a Roland JX-8P. I've got one, but don't use it anymore. ;-) I don't use any of my hardware anymore, actually. Hahaha!! Jump was an Oberheim OB-Xa. :-)

  • iSem is an Oberheim clone and does good Vangelis-style brass, but it doesn't sound like the piercing brass of the JX-8P. I'm not sure what synth would be good for that... Same with the Oberheim OB-Xa sound. Have you looked into samples? Maybe you'll find something you like in soundfont format?

I talked about "Jump" in the following post to the one you quoted. :)

In fact, you are (partly) right: "Final Countdown" was recorded layering the JX-8P and a FM TX816 (which is eight DX7 modules, nothing more, nothing less): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Final_Countdown_(album)

  • You can get some great brass sounds from the Poison 202. It's a very Rolandy synth.

Actually, I must correct myself! I was going from memory, and after posting I decided to look it up to be sure. Here's what I found:

Written by Joey Tempest, the song was conceived as an opening track for gigs (makes sense!) and a magazine interview with Mic Michaeli (Europe’s keyboard player) revealed that the sound was a combination of Roland JX8P and a Yamaha TX816 FM rack synth. And what a huge sound it is.

    We were both right!!

Right you are! And we cross posted our messages about a minute apart! Notice my clarification/admission above! Hahaha!!!

  • Yeah, and I'll start combining analogue and FM from some epic synth brasses: nothing better than enriching conversation and also learning from the ones who made history. :D

  • Check out iSem. The N. Ubukata "Leap" preset sounds close to the sound in Jump...

Agreed! I'm going to have to experiment with that too!

  • ifretless brass has some nice 80's brass sounds. in fact there is a preset called " final countdown"

the app sounds great, but may not have the attack and snap you may be looking for those songs. however if your looking for longer sustain notes these to that very well.

Update: Ah, you meant an instrument, not a preset. No worries! I was afraid I was missing special preset mixes.
