Playing multiple monophonic synths at once using note-per-channel or MPE (solved, mostly)

My mission? To play my Nord Drum 2, which is hooked up to my iPad via MIDI, as a polyphonic synth. Right now it's effectively six monophonic synths in one unit, each assigned to channels 1-6. Other uses for this technique could involve playing multiple iOS synths at the same time on a per-note basis.

First, the basic challenge. Hoping there's a MIDI utility app that can help with this. Each time I trigger a MIDI note, I'd like it to send on a different channel, cycling through MIDI channels 1-4. For example, the first performed note goes to Ch. 1, second goes to Ch. 2, third to Ch. 3, fourth to Ch. 4, then the fifth note goes back to Ch. 1, and so on, like with MPE. A four note chord would play across four channels simultaneously. I don't want to buy a physical MPE controller for this - wanting to do it within the iOS ecosystem.

Does anyone know of an app that:

a) can take MIDI notes coming from a source (e.g. MIDI keyboard or MIDI arp) and spread them across four channels as described above? Perhaps something like Midiflow?

Or

b) has a virtual keyboard that can send MPE MIDI out? I know Animoog can receive MPE input, but can it send MPE to other synths that support it with the MIDI Out IAP? I'm only interested in the note-per-channel part, not the advanced expression stuff.

Any help would be appreciated!

  • Navichord can do the spreading thing.

  • ThumbJam can do channel-per-touch output when playing from its surface. So can Geo Synthesizer, and there are probably some others.

I would like to make a utility that takes incoming single channel MIDI notes and cycles them through multiple output channels, but don't have the time at the moment. I don't think any of the current MIDI filtering utilities can do this yet.

  • @DeVlaeminck Thanks for that. I'll have a look at Navichord.

Heh, I figured out Thumbjam's performance surface could do note-per-channel just moments before you posted. It works brilliantly with the Nord Drum - vision becomes reality. Big thanks. I continue to be very impressed with ThumbJam. Doesn't surprise me that you've got MPE in there - love the app and have been using it for years. If and when you get around to producing that utility, I'll definitely buy it - I would use it all the time.
