Mixing Outputs of 2 Devices

This may seem like a basic question, but how can I mix the outputs of two devices for recording purposes? Would a simple splitter like this work fine?

Comments

  • Yep, should work fine.

  • Not a good idea. Electronics don't like to have their outputs directly connected (shorted) to another output, because then it becomes a fight to the death to control the signal. One is pushing when the other is pulling, both using all of their power to fight to maintain what they are trying to output. You can inexpensively mix them passively, look for a stereo passive mixer. Or a little Rolls line mixer. Or a little behringer mixer or something with a couple stereo line inputs.

If you can solder you can inexpensively build a special summing cable by using the adapter you linked to, and adding some resistors inline.

  • Hi!
    This is what I use - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Colour-Rockstar-Splitter-Headphone/dp/B00904WS2K
I love them! Also they automatically know whether your using an input (iPad/iPhone/etc) or output (speakers, headphones, etc)

    Happy mixing!!!

I use the same. Works fine with an iPad, a couple of Volcas, and a PO-12.

  • i use a Belkin Rockstar as splitter when i just want to do a livejam. but trust me. its gonna garble the recording a bit. specially when you have signals in the same frequency range. E.g:- a Volca Sample and a Volca Bass.

  • Thanks for all of the suggestions!

  • I use an Art SplitMix4; a cheapish passive clean 4 stereo channels mixer and splitter. I use it for mixing stereo outs from an iPad Mini, iPod Touch and a stereo effects pedal into whatever hardware/software recorder I'm using. A Rolls MX41b is another good passive mixer option.

When you use multiple IOS devices what apps are you using on each device?

Which one records of the devices?

PO12, what do you use to record that? What device, what is running?

I am just trying to envision this for my own practical application.

  • @RustiK a Zoom h4. I monitor through that as well.

I use a regular mixer at home. That Belkin is for the "jamming while camping or a sunny afternoon at a coffeeshop" setup. It's not hi-fi but it works absolutely fine.

  • Interesting Thread. I use this one:

IK Multimedia iRig Mix DJ-style mixer for smartphones and tablets
    https://www.amazon.com/IK-Multimedia-iRig-Mix-smartphones/dp/B006Z7HYLA

btw Much cheaper when you can find them second hand

Wait, do you mean you plug multiple devices IN to the star? Where do you plug the main plug, and how do you mix the input? On each device volume?

  • I had trouble with 3 Volcas and the rockstar. My volca bass kept losing sync. No troubles with 2 though. May have had something to do with volumes. I think I read something about it being to do with bleedback? coming back down the audio cable, sending some kind of pulse that triggers the sequence out of time.

It's a passive device. You can use them as a bunch of inputs or a bunch of outputs. This makes for the technical problems described above. For jamming though, at least with my stuff, works fine. And yes, all mixing, levels wise, has to be done on each device. This just serves as a big mult.
