I really need help with my next studio addition! Help me spend about 1000 euros!
Hi All.. I really could do with your experiences / input / creativity here.
I have made music for the past 25 years as an amateur. Started with a cassette four track, from a 8 track hard disk recorder, to now PC with Cubase, Akai mpc studio and more vst plugins than I need. Much more. But the last year I noticed I was becoming more of a hoarder than a musician. All the possibilities (how many vst compressors doe you really need?) killed my creativity. I haven't actually written a song in years. Not even a chorus. Or a verse.
Then I discovered Patterning and Gadget on the iPad and during the holidays I found myself being old school productive again.. and enjoyed myself more than ever. So I have decided to lose the computer as a music production tool. The centre of my set-up is now my iPad, with Patterning and Gadget being frequently used, and Cubasis ready to record vocals / guitars if the need would arrive. So I was thinking about one more hardware addition. And my girlfriend gave me a Teenage engineering OP1! I linked & synced it to my iPad/ Patterning with an Iconnectivity iAudio4+. I love that OP1, but after a week of toying I found out that I could not really save a project. So I had very cool and expensive sketchpad. Not what I wanted, I wanted 1 piece of hardware to complete the studio set up. So I traded the OP-1 for an Elektron Analog four. An absolutely awesome machine in every way. But I soon realized I spend soo much time sculpting great sounding sounds... I ended up again not making music. So I returned the A4.
but now what?
I am out of ideas.
So what would complete your ideal musical set-up next to an iPad with Patterning and Gadget? I can basically connect and sync anything to the iPad with the iConnectaudio4+. But what? A stand alone MPC? A Novation Circuit? Korg Micro controllers? Or something old school second hand? Another iPad? A laptop running mpc software with the studio controller? Or?
Budget: around 1000 euros.
Your input is highly appreciated!
Erik

I'd just keep everything contained in the iPad, maybe get some midi controller apps, then get and use AUM/Audioshare as it's probably the most conducive set of tools for musical output available for iOS.
Another way to go would be Ableton Live, as it's geared towards pairing with iOS.
Well the korg nano key studio is a must have. Doesn't feel the greatest but it links without a hiccup to any app i've tried it with and makes gadget more playable. I keep it on the couch. I had the analog four and now have the keys. A little more but pretty good as a controller, with just a button to switch over from synth to controller. That's really the only hardware i feel i need to keep. That and a good weighted key controller as i am a piano player.
A decent pair of monitors
Absolutely. The most important piece of equipment in the studio. If you have a dedicated space for your studio, save a couple hundred for a few bass traps, and you will be able to hear clearly and have an easier time getting good mixes that translate to other people's stereos.
+1 monitors
Should have said this at the beginning, but monitors and headphones are well taken care of.
If not, I completely agree that monitors would be the way to go!
Also after i sold a drum machine i picked up a nice set of akg headphones (i find that unless you have a professionally treated room iget closer to whatiwant with headphones) and since i am working on my phone and gadget when i'm out i also picked up a good pair of earbuds. Both get way more use than any individual instrument i have had
I bought a Zenbook to run a straight up DAW with my ipads and circuit a few months ago. SO glad I did.
Yah, monitors are good for mixing if you want others to apreciate your stuff Etc. but that is certainly not a prerequist, I would rather have fun than try to impress others. To each their own in the end.
Yeah it looks like Ableton is the one DAW that is really working with Ios.. i love the ableton export function in Patterning...
Which DAW are you running? and do you sync it with your iPad? Or export stuff you do on your iPad to the Zenbook?
tnx! I only recently doscovered the nano key series.. looks apealing and pretty affordable too... doe anyone of youknow if you can use both the Nano control and the Nano key at the same time?
So True... After i bought a pair of Beyerdynamic 990's I can work a lot longer as well!
I use one called Samplitude that I have just stuck with the past twenty years. They keep updating it with nice things and it has a few aspects (particularly in regards to sound collage and mixing) that I am just accustomed to. I tried a few other daws and yes there are so many cool options. I do sync it to iPad for some things (mostly Effectrix). I like to record into Blocs Wave (things like Circuit, other apps, even VST synths from the laptop) and will sometimes start tracks on the laptop, export them to Blocs for on the go over dubs and slicing, chopping, rearranging. Everything that is deemed 'finish worthy' is exported to samplitude on the laptop. Sometimes I will do the process a few times of bouncing from Blocs to PC then back to Blocs then back to PC...
@erikb1971 Yes, you can and they work great together. I did a video on how the nanoKEY Studio has its controllers pre-mapped to work with the various Gadgets.
I've really been enjoying using it to control Lexington.
I have a Yamaha QY700 you'd probably find invaluable in your studio. I was going to ebay it and probably get between £200 to £300 with a bit of luck, but if you need to spend 1000 euro I could raise my price to that, to assist you.
It was actually that video that made me consider the nano controllers seriously! Thank you!
let me first of al thank you for your gracious offer to raise the price! highly appreciated! I had never heard of that machine and I am looking into it now. It is a bit as if my old trinity rack module on steroids had a threesome with a sequencer and a commodore 64 .Don't know for sure if that is a good thing!
Made a first small step by ordering the nano key studio and the nano control studio. And while I was at it also bought Madrid gadget and the Korg Odyssei app. Testing it this weekend! Looking forward to it!
@erikb1971 : If too many overwhelming gear choices are what keep you from creating, I might want to reconsider my "add more" habits, and start thinking about which choices to remove one by one, and when I started creating again, to leave my gear alone after that.
You have my sympathies, I know how hard breaking problematic habits can be, I've been there many times, I wish you every luck in succeeding.
Wise words.. lets make some music and quit looking at gear mags!
