The perfect App ?

Time and time again I read here about App 'X' not being 'quite right' to be able to make music with - 'If only it had this / if only it could do that' etc. Apps are compared against each other as to which is the 'best', when (I would say) they pretty much could all be useful to most musicians - depending on their particular requirements. It seems a case of perpetual 'if only'.

I really think that what you can currently do on iOS is pretty staggering. To be forever yearning for the 'magic bullet' app must be quite an unsatisfactory experience, as it probably won't manifest (for one thing) and surely it's a better approach to just actually make some choices with the myriad of existing apps and actually work with them / make some music with them ? Every piece of gear / software / app has limitations, but also (usually) areas that it excels in too.

Of course, pretty much all apps will probably improve over time anyway, but it's the here and now that we have to work with. I currently use Gadget - it lacks certain features I would like, but it also does an awful lot too that enables me to create stuff. I plan to move onto other DAWs next - warts and all :)

  • Yes, it's much more satisfying to just get on with being creative/productive IMO. I see exactly the same thing in 3D, people always comparing apps, but as always you can do good work in all of them, so I just tend to pick one and get to know it completely inside out, and work withing its limitations.

  • Animoog is perfect, as well as Fieldscaper imo

My least favorite thing about this forum is when a big new app is released and i log on, and instead of impressions/discussions on what's there there's already several pages of wants or 'missing features', usually nitpicks, within mere hours of release.

I agree completely with this. For the developers, it must be really disheartening.

I know, but it's much easier for me to spend time critiquing the lack of a random ARP feature than taking responsibility for writing a decent couplet :)

I learn so much from the people on this forum, imo it's a case of allot of people being quite knowledgeable and addressing the releases from what they already know of the app prior or the type of instrumentation the app is based on, just my impression.

if I was to get irritated it would be with the occasional poster suggesting we buy an app cause the developer is such a cool chap to have a beer with as opposed to the quality of the app itself, but I don't because I can't stop thinking about beat machines long enough for something like that to truly matter.

  • There will always be a more perfect app next week. The nature of the beast is that we always want that bit extra as soon as we master how to use it. There is just so much choice now. If only I could tell myself to stick with what I got say a year ago and play within, and accept, their limitations. Dammit, I am still trying to get to grips with GarageBand and Jamup!

Hey, we all have our causes...

  • The perfect app is like the perfect woman(or man, as each may prefer), opinions and results may vary.
If there was a forum where we could suggest our preferences and upgrade ideas for future potential boy/girlfriends it might be an interesting forum indeed. The audiobus forum has been responsible for much more improvement of iOS music than the results of all the bars, girls-night-outs and tailgating parties combined.

To me an app is perfect when it's so fun to use that suddenly you feel spoiled and unable to get into other apps easily. Thanks IKaossilator, you bastard.

    And also Animoog

  • Animoog and Loopy HD were always this (for me). As new features came along it was just extra toppings on an already delicious ice cream sundae.

This comment is missing examples to specific threads and apps/features. Otherwise it would be perfect like S#nv@x.

there is only a few apps i would call perfect..

    and they are:
    Samplr and Nanostudio

Also Gadget and Blocs Wave are pretty damn amazing too

  • For me, there isn't a 'perfect' app.

My point was that there are a lot of really good apps which are good enough to use now, rather than waiting for this 'perfect app'. I imagine the only way to create a perfect app for all of one's requirements, is to create it yourself.

  • good point - what puzzles me frequently is the difference requested in workflow.
must be really tough for a developer to get all (or at least most) folks happy

  • Sun______ is nearly perfect for me. It has some minor niggles like the piano roll is rotated 90 degrees and it doesn't always sync well with other apps but nothing I can't work around.

  • Gadget, Caustic, BeatHawk, Cubasis
I find it much more productive to use an all-in-one and use standalone apps to create loops or samples to use in those apps.

  • I do not seek perfection, only a brief idea that makes a brief moment of clarity into music.

    This.

I don't use fugue machine for weeks, bust it out on a whim, and 30 minutes later I've got something new and unexpected. I could ask for more but it would feel like kicking the universe in the shins.
