AudioQuest DragonFly Red and iPad music production

Hello,

I've been leeching this forum for a long time now (learned a lot, thanks for that) but I finally have a reason to post something now :) I'm considering to buy an external DAC/amp for the iPad to get an increase in sound quality compared to the built-in 3.5mm jack, I also want to use this DAC/amp to listen to music over headphones on my Mac so I'm looking at the AudioQuest DragonFly Red.

I already have a Fiio E10k but unfortunately it is unusable with iPad music production apps, the problem is described by somebody else here on the Kymatica forum: http://kymatica.com/forum/index.php/topic,176.msg849.html#msg849
When using the E10k (connected via the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter) with AUM/Audiobus/Cubasis or basically any music production app (like Audulus for example) it is impossible to get sound out of it. When playing back "normal" audio (Spotify/YouTube etcetera) it works fine. It doesn't look this will ever be solved so I'm looking at the DragonFly now and I'm hoping this will also work fine with music production apps.

Has anybody used the DragonFly Red (or Black) successfully with music production apps on the iPad? Thanks for your help :)

  • Have the black. No problems that I remember.

  • I use the black all the time. Recommended by @Tarekith.

  • Thanks, looks like I will have to pull the trigger then :)

I use the Red myself, but yes it's a decent improvement for sure even with the Black.

Does red have different specs than "new" black? I should have been more attentive.

  • Red has a hotter output, that's the main difference. I've heard people say the Black sounds a bit warmer, but my guess is that it's just the lower output influencing that.

  • I just plugged my Dragonfly Red into an iPad Air 2 and loaded up some demo tracks in Cubasis and Auria Pro - they all played through fine. I can't speak for any latency because I can't think how to connect a guitar or keyboard when the Lightning connector is already in use by the DF... ! Also works in AUM, it shows as a USB output for left and right. As I understand it, with the DF Red plugged in, full volume on the iPad (the only way to control the volume) is effectively a line out signal strength...

This is exactly what I wanted to know, thanks :)

Which headphones are you using with the Red?

  • Shure SE846's.

  • I plan on using the Dragonfly Red with an iPad Pro 10.5, but I’d also like to use a midi controller at the same time, such as an Arturia Keystep or an AKAI MPD218. Has anyone had any luck having the iPad powering both the Dragonfly and a USB midi device using an unpowered hub (plus CCK)?

  • hi @handed, with my iPad Pro 9.7 I was using an unpowered USB hub + CCK with the dragonfly red and two midi controllers (MPD226 and CME XKey), and I got everything powered by connecting a portable battery pack to the CCK lightning port.

The 3rd gen iPad Pro powers both controllers and dragonfly red, so I only need a USB C hub now.

Great to know, thanks. I’ve already got everything you mentioned, but was hoping I wouldn’t need to use an external battery.

The Red will arrive in a couple of days - looking forward to using it for sampling into a Digitakt, plus also with Ableton on the go with a MacBook and some nice headphones. Hope it ends up being worth it. :)
