Also on Sale - The Orchestra App

As I've been attempting to write orchestral music lately, I downloaded "The Orchestra," which is on sale from $12.99 to $2.99.

IMHO This is easily one of the greatest iPad apps I have ever seen.

If you don't know it, it lets you follow a score while a symphony plays, among many other things. And if you can't relate to tradition tablature, you can switch to a MIDI DAW type display.

It shows you videos of the players and the conductor, and there is this cool thing called the BeatMap which shows you pulsing circles that indicate which musicians are playing. For an extra buck you can press on a circle and solo the instrument.

Even if you don't like this kind of music, I think spending a few hours with it would give everybody a lot of ideas for how they might make their latest Gadget composition more interesting.

It is 2 GB however.

I am getting some of the other apps by the same company while they are so cheap, including "The Four Seasons" and Beethoven's 9th. I'm going to delete them after I get them to get the space back and then reinstall one at a time.

  • Got to be worth a look at that price! I really like some of the musical selections too!
2GB yes but can always delete after listening so not a problem for me either at the moment! :)

  • Hey, Reid, I bought the Beethoven first then just saw this. I think I'll also stockpile the Four Seasons.

I like switching between performances in real time to hear the differences. In the Beethoven one of the performances was on period instruments at a slightly different tuning. I believe one of the movements was played 50% faster than the same movement in another performance. It's great to hear the extent of creative interpretation between versions.

Where is the IAP accessed in The Orchestra?

  • @TrustButVerify I'm going to get the Beethoven today.

The solo audio function works in the Beethoven in "The Orchestra," but if you try to solo in one of the others, it prompts you for the IAP.

"The Four Seasons" is fascinating, because the have the original Vivaldi plus a "Recomposed" modern version by Max Richter.
