Maybe the shine will come off as it all starts to sound the same after a while? But right now it feels like each Milpatas instance is its own little audio manipulation studio in its own right. Right inside Gadget.

Thanks for the demo Matt, very helpful, and nice work.

I really like the sequencing feature - very clever, but it's still sequencing 'that sound'. Just personal taste, but I've never got on with the crisp sound of 80's/90's synths, and it seems to be there in all the demos I've heard so far. And I'm guessing by the end of the week there will be a thousand new tracks with similar rhythms in them.

Still need to hear more before I can see it working with what I do, but I can see the attraction for others.

I'll do another demo with the distortion effect applied. It really doesn't sound 'clean' at all. There are so many sounds in there and with them pitched and mangled I think you can do a lot.

I do fear for your second point, a bit, though.

  • Very nice, @Matt_Fletcher_2000

This is my first play of iWavestation. I just selected a preset (Midnight Run) in the Standalone version of the app and the took advantage of the cool split keyboard to have a sequenced drone and played a melody in the other half.

Internal tempo didn't seem to be used for the arp in this track as it wouldn't synch to the Cubasis Metronome (maybe Midi synch would have been better?). Quite a full sound but missing Abelton Link.

I'm sure I will buy this anyway. The official Korg demo track is pretty poor. This demo (though helpful) could do with being a bit more.

Update - sorry didn't want to sound negative, Matt...

  • Anyone try it on Air1 yet?

shouldn't have any problems. I read somewhere it even works on an old ipad 2!!!

Not at all :). You're right.

I'll post some more if/when I get some time.

nice. Like the arp in that.

I'm blown away by iWavestation after my first 45mins with it. Here's a sample jam I put together with it.

    • One instance (just 1!) of iWavestation in Gadget
    • One instance of Tokyo that comes in at 52secs and then comes out again (everything before that, including all those perc sounds, is the one instance of iWavestation!!)

    That's it!

And to be honest my 'programming' pretty much amounted hitting the random button until I got a sequence I could tweak - then tweaking it a bit and then playing with the filter a bit during the performance.

This is a dream come true for me in Gadget (I think) because it gives me all the weird granular, organic sounding (and rhythmic) stuff that Gadget was previously missing.

Workflow wise it's unbelievably good! All this sound richness in just one instance. Unbelievable.

I've seen people on the main thread saying 'what's the big deal with all these cheesy retro sounds' and I would have some sympathy with that (I barely use iM1/Darwin and many of the presets I've quickly browsed in iWavestation do sound cheesy to me). But man, if you get creative with this thing I think you can make it sound unbelievably modern since it seems like it can really, really mash some audio in very weird ways...

It's also got to be the most complex synth in Gadget so far...

For me, this one is definitely a 'buy'.

Let me know what you think of my sample...

Well... I wasn't going to buy this but now...

    Thanks @Matt_Fletcher_2000 - I like it!

    Awesome, thanks! :)

  • The random button is worth it alone. So easy to tweak the results into whatever you want.

I think I've figured out the strange timing of this release. Most of the demos sound like BAND AID's "Do They Know it's Christmas".

  • Thanks Matt - nice track, and definitely sounds like it can be manipulated to taste. Wasn't sure before, but will definitely give it a go.

    Hope you're getting commission...

I'd say the way im using this it has more in common with Egoist than a synth...

Did run it quickly through Egoist, but somehow still managed to retain the vintage sound somewhat (and thus the draperies...)

I like that a lot - how did you integrate it into Egoist - did you import a WS audio file and play it through the mangler, or is there some other magic I don't know about?

Well, that was certainly weird :).

Nothing personal. Am getting over a terribly violent case of spicy-meatball-sickness picked up at the Macaroni Grill in O'Hare. TMI but offered in the spirit of making informed food choices when on the road.

All I did was make a very simple melody (actually based on 'Taps' of all things) with a couple of cheesy samples from WS and then pasted them into Egoist and fiddled about (very little) and not very elegantly. Intend to take back to my bed and do better, but proof of post-cheese concept etc, but let's not talk any more about food for now...

Paste in? Do you mean import? I can't see an option to paste in a sample, but (spurred on by your thing) I had a go with Egoist earlier. Kinda fun, but I always end up with the same thing.

I think iWavestation is definitely on the xmas list as it's on sale until Jan. No rush until then.

I tend to ram my fist down my throat when I'm feeling sick to make myself vomit - hurts like Cribbins but gets it over and done with, and makes room for more pie and boozes.

Yes, yes. When on the chaise lounges with no more room for cocaine-sugared bonbons I always make myself throw-up (or have a servant do it for me), but this was more of a 'Ah, so dead while living, how horrible yet interesting also...' 24 hours of very sorry for myself, but back on the road now....

As for the 'paste in' I meant exporting to Audiocopy the wavestation/milpitas 'Taps' line (made up with three iterations: Dyno Vibes, Uood Piano, Fire Dance) and the pasting it into a blank Egoist file and working with it from there...

How do you do that? I couldn't see how to paste in a file, but I managed to import one from Audioshare. I'm missing something obvious somewhere...

Click on the the slot here seen as 'empty', not the song title above the sample thingie below and here elegantly drawn attention to by way of chick scratch:

Then on the bottom right on 'import'

    And then Audiopaste....

All good. I would think taking your own mad machine music and giving it a wash and brush up in Egoist should keep you plenty busy....
