Import from AudioShare

Not directly AB related, but I'd like to see more devs build out the Import from Audioshare into their apps, and pruning down all the samples they include within their apps, or make it easier for the user to delete them....or make them available online. My desire would be to have Audioshare be the single repository for samples which could just be imported into any app as needed, reducing the size of many apps. I realize that would mean other devs would have to add this in, but I would think that they would benefit if the demand for this functionality was high.

  • I second that.

  • I would love it, personally, but can understand not wanting to replace local sample storage in your app. Means customers have to buy something else and you have to rely on another app...

Maybe @j_liljedahl could create an full on sample management component that devs could drop into their apps (which would include the audioshare SDK). Not sure it's worth his time though!

I often wish Yonac would do that with their preset management component. It's so much better than most! Feel like so many devs are off in bedrooms and offices alone recreating that same wheel.

  • Here's some more details:

The SDK can be downloaded from http://github.com/lijon/AudioShareSDK

Implementing it is really easy. About one line of code for export and two lines for import :)

The new import procedure looks like this:

    • user taps "import from audioshare" in some app
    • audioshare is automatically launched
    • inside audioshare, the usual big share buttons (soundcloud, email, etc) are replaced with buttons for "import into [name of other app]" and "cancel".
    • tapping cancel just puts audioshare back into normal mode
    • tapping import transfers the soundfile into the other app and switches back to it.

I think only Auria has implemented the import feature so far.

  • Thanks @j_liljedahl! I hope other devs pick up on this and given how easy it sounds, I don't see any reason that they wouldn't implement this with import and export. With that, users could port all the samples out that they want, and delete the rest, yet it wouldn't force anyone to purchase AudioShare.

  • @funjunkie27 Unfortunately an app can't delete files inside its own bundle. So any samples that are shipped with an app will stay there and take up space. One alternative would be for such apps to download these samples from their web service and put them in the apps Documents instead, so that they can be deleted if wanted.

I too think it's a bit annoying that some apps ships with hundreds of megabytes of samples, and you might only use a small part of them.

  • Intua, we're talking about you here! (amongst others)... Hehehe!

  • Thanks for the clarification on that @j_liljedahl. I would be ok with downloading them from their web site. To me, that would be better than having unneeded samples on my device. I end up pruning out seldom used apps a lot, and the bloated apps are the first candidates. I upgraded from a 16G to a 32G iPad, thinking that double the space would take me a lot longer to fill than it actually did!

  • @funjunkie27 I'm the same way--the bloated ones are the first to go! I've only got 16Gb, and It is amazing I've been able to cram what I have onto my iPad. I just don't have any room for anything that won't get used or will take up a lot of space.

  • Too bad these devices don't have an SD card storage, that would be awesome.

  • Then who would buy the larger storage devices? Lol.

  • The same people who buy large sodas when they offer free refills on all sizes. ;-)

  • Lol. So true, and the large sodas get filled with more ice.
