Why doesn't NINJA JAMM get more love?

I freaking love this app.

I use it for sound fx and in my LOFI / hardcore stuff but it would work in many other genres.

PLUS IT IS FREAKING FUN!

I wish I could just get my own stuff their easier.

Performance wise, this app is the tops. In fact, if you use the app you notice MANY other apps borrowed ideas from this app.

I just wanted to give some love and recommend it if you are looking for something new to play with.

  • So you can put your own stuff in there?

I tried the first version of it and was not impressed enough so deleted it. Maybe a revisit is in order.

  • That ridiculous name sure doesn't help. Hobbled right out of the gate.

Same. Very limited with only the song packs. It was fun to jam with though. Without user samples not very interested.

  • Looks as though (maybe) you can import your own 'packs' via itunes?

  • the dev posted not long ago that they are working on the update for sample import and said it's on the way

  • Great if they do that! Always seemed to like an app to promote artists on their label. (nothing wrong with that btw)

  • Sweet, it's free! Sample import will make this killer. Thanks for the heads up

hey yall. Matt B from Coldcut/Ninja Tune/Ninja Jamm here. thanks for the discussion round Jamm.

Not easily , yet. But if you want to dive in, this how-to will help

https://www.dropbox.com/s/vjvdbgiocrxgi1i/DIY guide to live9 Ninja Jamm tunepack making x 0.3.zip?dl

The functionality to load your own samples (LYOS!) should have been in from the start. I was persuaded to do it more as a 'remix Ninja Tunes' app than a music making app, which latter was my original idea. bad mistake. People want to make their own tunes. Apart from that, on the functionality side I am still proud of the app, the vision for which is make the most advanced loop and beat app ever. It is the latest incarnation of 20 years messing with electronic music software...some of you may remember our first Coldcut attempts at that in the 90s. Heres DJamm , its forerunner from 1998.

Its personally rather annoying that subsequently other apps used the loop manipulation concept AND included LYOS and sold better than us. However I would contend that Jamms facilities like the Coldcutter which is a buffershuffle engine, still outplay them. Check out this 1 take routine and see what you think.

Financially, the app has been frankly a disaster! Even tho we developed it for about 1;/5 of what it should have cost!) But, Im continuing to fund dev myself as its my baby and I love it. Jamm Pro will be the next version (its better to have a new app than a new IAP for an old app, all the marketing bods say) and the LYOS is already working. Ableton Link is in ( and yes we were the first Android music app with Link...the Android music community needs love!).

Plus a huge raft of new features. Im throwing it down right here: I regard Jamm as already the most advanced beat app out there, I know what Im doing with it, and I intend to take it all the way. Interest from heads like the group here is a big part of my motivation. So please dont hate, help me achieve the goal.

Coldcut will be touring in 2017 as its our 30 birthday! and using Jamm Pro (JP) live. See you there hopefully.

That ridiculous name sure doesn't help. Hobbled right out of the gate.

We ARE Ninja (Tune), and Jamm is a word we've used for our software for 20 years. But, if it turned you off, damn maybe it doesnt work. Is just Jamm or Jamm Pro OK?

  • the legend himself, I don't think at least I hope it wasn't the Ninja part of the name that he disliked but he might be talking about the fact that allot of decidedly toy apps that were never meant to be taken seriously seem to gravitate to putting 'jam' in their name....I guess the word is just a little passe like the new jack swing but personally I don't care what you call it, I'm looking forward to the new features and hopefully other devs will follow suit and let people put their own sounds into the beat machines they make..... and they know who they are :)

  • Looking forward to the new app!

  • @mattblack. I still listen to Beats and Pieces. The vinyl is hiding somewhere. Respect to you! It really was cutting edge at the time and still sounds tremendous. Will check out ninja jamm

  • This is utterly different to the way I make music...but that's why I love the iPad. Just installed it and it crashed twice while browsing packs and then again when I bought the submotion orchestra pack. (I just wanted to part with some cash...I can see the work that's gone in to this). I can see potential for some real fun here if the app is stable. Would love to be able to import loops from other apps...Blocs Wave, Loopy, Samplr, because the UI looks so good to play with on this. Hope @mattblack will be encouraged by the interest shown here. I've been out of the picture of late, but the iOS music making community is v active and prepared to support developers who engage with their customers. Bring it on, Matt! iPad Air 2 iOS 10.1.1

  • Yeah. I don't mean to be a jerk. Naming is hard. But the name is pretty dated at this point. I'm sure I've overlooked it in the app list thinking it a toy. The Ninja is fine in the company name, but personally, I would keep it out of the product name, and the Jamm's extra m is kinda "early days", so I'd probably look for something altogether new.

If you have a bunch of new features coming up, then now might be the perfect time for a rebrand— new name, icon and a little UI refresh. Actually, "Coldcut" would be a big improvement, imo. That's kind of fun. The "Pro" tag might help with legitimacy, too (assuming there's a standard version).

Or I'm just a picky *sshole. If the app gets popular enough, then no one really cares what the name is.

    Thanks for the reply @mattblack!
That's too bad about the financial part. There is obviously plenty of good stuff in there and the hard work and attention to detail shows. I do think once this or the new app allows for easier remixing of original user stuff the buying public will respond. But really I don't know what the market is like for something like this. I would be interested is what I do know.
I was very excited when I saw that you/ninja tune were involved in an iOS app and I like the name. I removed it when I couldn't find a way to get my stuff in there.

  • @mattblack Thanks for stopping in. Love your enthusiasm and look forward to seeing you realize your vision.

great idea >ColdCut or even ColdCutter, I get your sentiments 7/11 is much better than 11/7

  • Really looking forward to this, big fan of coldcut. I really enjoyed this app but I don't use other people's music so no sample import meant deleting it eventually. Excited for the new version!!

    ^^^ that

Thanks for the news on the app @mattblack, it was always a lot of fun to play with, great sound & has a great feature set but maybe got a bit pigeonholed in the ever growing 'remix app' category ? Whilst chopping up other artists material can be a lot of fun, the obvious limits of using existent copyrighted material for original creations remain. Looking forward to the next version.

Eternal thanks also for keeping us entertained on all those nights with the Solid Steel shows on kissfm - Saturday nights into Sunday mornings, followed by Manasseh ... good memories :)

Maybe it was just the Android version i installed that was just a game, and here are some reasons for you
1 Only other peoples content, that can't actually be used in your own songs for release (Correct me if i misunderstood the licence) i hope Led Zeppelin have no problem with the levy break being used haha.
2 No peripheral support (It is not an AU/ It can not be configured with a launchpad or any MIDI, on and on)
3 Stretched (Awkward) UI on anything bigger than a phone that looks extremely outdated, which also leads to a terrible UX (Use this or Launchpad/RemixLive/LoopytunesHD on an iPad, sorry no competition at all)
While the old fashioned toy like UI was popular for a while, the much more modern and future proof style of Launchpad is way way better for live (in the dark haha) use.

While it is great for the developer to be here in the thread, it does come across as a bit low to me personally when comments are made about other apps/developers, who actually update there apps/software with wanted features and don't just try to exist on unusable IAP soundsets.
Saying that you are first this or that is just a bit silly really, and to be fair, Mixvibes may have a word or two about you claiming to be first Android with Ableton link.

Load your own sounds (Do it as an IAP if you need the funds)
MIDI controller support (Do it as an IAP if you need the funds)
Up to date non toy like UI that works at multiple resolutions
    AUv3 support
Start looking at these things and it will be a very very serious instrument, ignore them and remain the game that the app currently is, for instance, if you dropped Jamm Pro with AUv3 support, you could get ahead of the game considering the others have not gotten round to that yet.
(For the record, i have no issue with games, they are great to mess with, this app is great to mess with, but it is a game)
