What looping app is the LEAST likely to crash?
Hey fellas,
I am dabbling in the beatmaking and synths and stuff with this ipad, all is well with that,
But the real reason I have this beast is to do live beatboxing looping.
I really really need a rock rock solid looping app that wont go down on me in the middle of a set, so far Loopersonic and Quantiloop have both crashed on me and its super disheartening. I have GTL ( kind of impenetrable) , Loopy, Everest and Blocs Wave, in addition to the two i mentioned earlier. Out of these, which has been the most stable and non-crashy for you?
Im in love with the ipad and so stoked to start gigging with it, but im sweating a crash at a crucial time in my career when im getting opportunities to play serious events in my scene.
Opinions welcomed ![]()

Oh and I am running ios 10 on a ipad mini 4, if that helps.
I'd say loopy and GTL. Quantiloop has been unreliable for me too but version 2.0 seems to be in the works and I'm trying to get into the beta program to help solve any problems with that...
Ill have to play with GTL more, it rubbed me the wrong way the first couple times. But thanks for ur input, ill mess around with it some more.
Loopy has never crashed on me ever. Use it live and it has never failed.
Do you do tempo changes a lot with it? Im in the habit now of speeding my first pass up quite a bit and adding a melody which becomes a bassline when i slow it back down. This is where some apps choke on me
It's fine with tempo changes but Loopy doesn't do pitch shifting.
Fingers crossed for loopy3!
I dont remember blocs wave ever crashing on me. I really dig its work flow. I havent used many other loopers, i got loopy hd as a freebie quite while back, but the user interface just didnt do it for me, so i deleted it pretty fast.
I always overlook blocs, i will definitely work it into my practice rotation and check it out. Itd be sweet if i had some fx, but that slice keyboard is so dope!
If you are incorporating something as hit or miss with reliability as ios in an important performance, you might consider having a plan B, like a second ipad loaded and ready to go. A "hot spare". It sounds like you rehearse with the app extensively to see if it is ever buggy. Another thing is to never update the OS or the app, once it is stable, unless you have a spare, because sadly you can't roll back versions in ios world.
I think the essence of ios bugginess in general is getting into any situation that wasn't tested extensively by the developer. Elaborate routing, Older or newer OS's, ipad versions they didn't own, audiobus or IAA if it isn't a central priority for them, midi slaving, etc. There is so many variables to test, and any moderately unusual use is likely to bring out the bugginess.
There was a thread here about a professional/touring guitarist incorporating Loopy into his live rig, and it was an interesting hearing his thoughts on reliablity. He said he would keep it really simple, like one app open at a time, or, if he needed an effect too, he would use audiobus, but just one lane. He could keep things from getting weird by keeping them simple, which makes sense, because the simple setups are generally the ones the developers are spending the most time testing.
If you use basic effects, you could always use some reverb or delay pedals, for one less variable in the ios jungle. less paging back and forth too.
Good luck with your performances! Interested to here how it goes.
Lots of good points, @Processaurus. I've had a pedal or two crap out on me in rehearsal, none in a gig thankfully. It's usually the cables or connection points that get compromised. To that end, I trust a simple locked-down iPad setup BY ITSELF as much as a pedal. To be honest I worry more about whether the interface and the lightning connector hold up under stage conditions than anything else. They are more delicate than quarter inch infrastructure.
I agree. I actually have a lot of complex things going on between the 2 iPads I use live for guitar and synth modules - not to mention 2 more iOS devices that I use for set list management and lighting control. The key to the hardware is to keep as much of it racked and cabled up.
The apps just need to be tested like crazy. More bug related issues will show up as you run more apps simultaneously. Apps that use resources efficiently will usually hold up better under this scenario. Monitoring resources as you use your apps, especially simultaneously, can give you a lot of insight toward the types of bugs that will show up when memory or CPU performance is compromised.
While I don't use loopers live right now, I have done a lot of testing with Loopy at various times and generally have found it to be pretty stable with other well behaved apps loaded.
I agree with many of your points but found that the set up needn't be simple in terms of software. I've run an 8 app audiobus set up several times live without any issues. The thing is that when preparing for live performances one is likely to rehearse extensively. This is even more true for a one/two man bands where there is a lot to remember and muscle memory development is an absolute must. It does however make a lot of sense to use rock solid apps which in my case are the likes of: loopy, sunrizer, Samplr. Even temperamental ones like Turnado behave well if they are open in a certain order (turnado likes to be open as the last effect app in the chain). Most of them are also easy on the system which definitely helps with unexpected spikes in demand.
I always have a spare iPad in the bag, just in case but I found it is better to have it clean and start the apps only once it is connected to the audio/midi interface. It happened to me that some apps wouldn't plug in correctly if I plugged them 'hot'.
Totally agree with not updating what's working and stable. Especially a few days before the gig. That would be suicidal.
Yup, i dont putz with pedals anymore. I wanna stay in the box so to speak, and sold all my pedals whe i went ios. Its also fairly important that my rig is 100% battery powered as we do alot of lil renegade sets in campgrounds and stuff with friends and we also busk.
I do really believe i can get loopersonic working great, i was being silly and running it through audiobus and aum, and dont think i need to do that after all to have two mics into it.
Both devs have been in contact with me looking to resolve my situation. Im also glad i have virsyn audioeffx, as im betting that AU will be the best to use as an fx module for my looper.
loop tree and quantiloop never crashed and I'm on iPad 4 with iOS 10 now. Loopy is almost perfect. Blam
Nice! Thats encouraging.
GTL is simply the right tool for live looping and backing tracks. Link it to launchpad or blocs wave for transitions and that's it.
Less is more sometimes so I agree with the KISS approach. At last it's all about the music (over gimmick and performance)
