Alesis iodock and iOS 10

My typical workflow is Audiobus with any number of inputs with Loopy as output generally. My question is: has anyone using an Air2 with Alesis iodock first version updated to iOS 10? If so, any feedback or issues you would share?
@Ganthofer, I thought I remember you using the Alesis. Could be wrong though. Thanks in advance for any input.

I have exactly the setup you are asking. IO dock version 1 with 30 pin adapter. Air 2 updated to latest IOS 10.x version.

    All working perfect.

  • Why do you keep them? Just curiosity...

  • This question is adressed to me or to the OP?

  • At a guess because they work perfectly....

The iodock is handy for audio and midi and keeps the iPad charged.

  • Considering these older docks can be picked up for pennies on the pound, and older iPads can be picked up quite cheap too, what is the downside ?

  • I use my ioDock as a nice angled stand for my iPad which is now connected using studiomux

  • Before the new cck usb3 the charge point made them a must but now I only see them useful with old iDevices (and that's why sold mine). Also with the difference performance between mini 4 and above the gap between old and new seems big to me even to keep them... I asked to see others pov of view since I'm happy and more productive now than never :)

  • Thanks @ AlexB. To the other posters: Yes, it ain't broke so I'm not going to try and fix it. Although I Would like a couple more inputs. The iconnect looks interesting but I understand people are having problems with ios10.>

    And this.

Well an old ipad in a dock using the outputs or studiomux, is still way less than the average VA hardware synth, has way more potential because you can change the synth (App) as you see fit, and probably takes up less space too.
So unless you are trying to slim down your entire studio to just a single Pad, then these old set ups bought cheap off Ebay are going to dry up real quick.
    Old iPad =
    Effect unit
    Synth
    Sampler
    Looper
    DAW controller
    Synth librarian
The list goes on and on, and as time goes on, older iPads and there peripherals are getting cheaper and cheaper on Ebay.

  • I have an iPad 2 + io dock. It no longer works with iOS 10. It behaves strangely, unusable. Even way back when it wasn't 100% reliable, but at least it was usable.
I really can't speak for iOS 9, cause I stopped sampling externally during the interim.

DISCLOSURE: I could never succeed in updating to the latest firmware from my iBook PPC (remember those?)

But since having a baby, I lost my studio space and I've had to learn to produce covertly. That means I have to be able to setup and break down in 1 minute in order to protect my gear and optimize my diminished spare time. No more complicated set ups. It's just my iPad mini w/retina, qunexus, and Stanton headphones. It was months of frustration but I'm glad for it now. It's really forced me to think differently and get creative with alternate work flows. I was gonna sell my iPad 2 but I wanna try using it for AB remote first.

  • Why not roll back to IOS 9 ?

  • Well in my case the effort to keep it useful inside my new workflow wasn't so so... if I had keep the ipad 3 and dock it will become a standalone dvs solution but in the time things based in raspi emerged (and djplayer erased the earlier buggy version from itunes... but cueplaying never worked neither).
So actually I can do things with AUM or GTL which I couldn't imagine with the old and the money go for new one, cck3 and class compliant audio interface ;)

It was great but less portable than my actual setup that's why ask others to know why keep it since cck3 also charges ipad but in addition we gain usb host which was my worst pain with the dock setup (using only old midi gear made me feel a bit limited...)

    Thanks everyone for sharing thoughts!

@Flexinoodle are you the same of dv forums? Mutis there, dubby here ;)

  • Ahh yeah its me Mutis hahaha

The firmware update is critical to make it work. I would suggest you to try again because it was piece of cake to update it and since then it works perfect.

Why keeping it? Because it has 5pin midi in and out, 2 input (XLR/TRS combo) preamps with Phantom power and guitar impedance setting, and 2 jack outputs. All in completely compact studio gear. For my second ipad which probably will be mainly used for clip launching I will buy a CCK3 to charge my Ipad, so I will have both (io dock and CCK3).

I see... Noises related to iPad3 problems was another reason to let it go...

I think it is the best app on IOS, poorly designed, and lack of vision (Very obviously because of yes men who think that everything is OK)
Could easily be one of the best sequencers/Hosts on any platform
From the amount of years i have been in this game, i know that telling developers that everything is perfect is the best way to kill an idea, tell them how crap it is in all the crappy areas, it can become a thing of gold.

Anyway back on subject, just been checking out the USB hack for the IO dock, definitely makes it a cool cheap ebay purchase

I did the firmware update when I bought it a year ago. So nothing related to IOS 10

  • A thing I have noticed about the iodock and the iPad 3 is that after about 45 minutes of use. The ipad3 heats up quite a bit. The battery temperature climbed over 100 degrees F.
Has anyone else observed this with the ipad3?

  • @Kandavu. My ipad3 would get pretty warm whenever I used it for music making. I always related it to the amount of processing we're asking it to do while running a number of different apps at once. I never noticed a palpable temperature change any other time.

  • @Ben, agreed. The iPad 3 heats up when taxed by app usage. While cocooned in the IOdock, the lack of air venting causes the iPad 3's temperature to rise even higher from what I've observed.
