Best SMF player in iOS ?

I'm fiddling with Yamaha Mobile Music Sequencer.. They make it easy to export files to one of their synths. But what if you export to SMF ? What's your best bet as a SMF player? Roland Sound Canvas for iOS? Bismarck bs16i? ? Sampletank 2?

  • I rarely encounter the SMF format anymore, but if you just need a player, maybe the bismark m16?

  • Isn't SMF just another way of saying midi?

Well, SMF stands for standard MIDI file, but I've come across MIDI files that weren't compatible with my apps/programs. I'm not sure if Yamaha MMS is like that.

There was a thread in a different forum where someone was asking about .MIDI files. (I think that's an Apple thing.) Anyway, just renaming the files from .MIDI to .MID made the files usable.

  • As a pure SMF player I'd say Roland iOS SoundCanvas...

  • Thanks guys.. Samu, yeah that's what I was thinking too.

  • Also check out Sweet Midi Player. You can load your own GM soundfont in this one and you can get a nice free one from my site https://sites.google.com/site/soundfonts4u/
Sweet Midi Player allows you to swap instruments, remix, view lyrics, change keys etc.
    One of my favourite apps.

Not quite. Saying midi is about as unambiguous as it was to say video in the 80s or 90s.
We watched a video on the video that we recorded on video.Oh really, what was it about? Buttresses.
Midi files are as you'd expect, a file with midi data in them. However, there was a brief period, in the early midi days, lost in the gravel of time, where a program would save data as midi, but in any particular arrangement it liked. Of course, nothing could read each other's files. Then the SMF was formulated, so that even if a program saved its own proprietary format, it could also at least export as an SMF and another program could possibly import it. On aggregate it was a good idea. General Midi had yet to arrive, but it soon did, and then we had GM SMFs. Now we even have Web MIDI.

  • Loading a SMF into Cubasis auto creates midi tracks with correct instruments
