Can we make ( good ) music with DrumPerfect Pro?

edited December 2016 in General App Discussion

Hi fellow iOS musicians,

Even with an iPad and so many wonderful apps, it does take time to produce decent ( good? ) music. As some of you know, DPP is deep, rich in so many features, yet not always the "fast food" type. You have to cook your beats, tweak them, take a rest in between, and finally when it sounds pleasant ( or just great ), perhaps take a bit more time to produce a balanced mix.

We realize many people might not imagine what could be done with DPP, and more important how it can sound.
So I searched my files, all iPad music production of the year, and since we are approaching XMas, would like to dedicate my music posted on SoundCloud, to all the great drummers/percussionists of the world, that have inspired and continue to inspire my work with DPP.
And of course, invite you, fellow iOS musicians, to listen and perhaps dig this material, for future inspiration. Time permitting, I will do my best to post tutorials to unfold some of the vast possibilities of this unique music app in constant maturation.

But the real intention here, is to invite you to share your work, being a simple pattern or a full track. We will listen to it, because we want to know how you approach these challenges. After listening it would be much easier to not only return some feedback, but share tips and hints as well, so we can refine our workflow, even learn best practices.
And well, personally I get more motivated to reply to listened music than written words. Simply because it touches my heart first, instead of my intellect.

  • Thanks for sharing.

  • I'm still learning DPP it's good to hear some work by it and someone on here.

  • I know I have found the work load to be way to much for me to have much love for it. On a good note I have heard a few people who have gotten nice results with it. If I were a drummer myself perhaps I would appreciate it more however I prefer an app that takes more of the workload off me when doing drum parts.

  • Thanks Gilbert. These are excellent, particularly love the Elvin and Tony W tracks, cant you offer these as downloads or IAPs into DPP? In know you have the packs which I already have, but would be great if there were lots more to download. If you look at the presets on something like elastic drums, which I know is a very different animal, there are loads to access, as well as randomise functions so you can get creative very quickly.
Drum genius is very very basic in comparison to DPP, but has access to hundreds of loops in different styles.
Many of us find DPP brilliant sounding but as you say, requires a lot of time to get results like these (for the average user) and most of us sadly just dont have the time to get the full potential of your wonderful app.

A 6/8 instrumental rock I did a while ago with Drum Perfect:

  • @Marinus doesn't visit much anymore, does he?

As an early DrumPerfect supporter, I still feel somewhat taken for a ride, but if the next Pro update looks good enough, I'll buy in again.

  • Another one, this time already with the "Pro" version. A friend of mine described it to me as a "sonzeira de caixa" (Brazilian Portuguese: a huge snare sound!). Dry kit, MIDI-driven by Auria Pro:

@telecharge: don't worry, I am still reading in regularly ;-)

@theconnactic: great tracks you posted! I am always proud if people create such wonderful music with the help of our "instrument". It's the whole reason why DPP was created.

The new update will be mainly about having almost full control over how the drumset will sound. If you want the snare to be more funky, pitch shift the samples a few hundreds of cents up. If you want to emphasize an instrument in the mix, apply a bit of real-time compression. If you want to control tom sustain, use the release phase of the sample envelope or time stretch the samples. If you want more tone in the snare, use the 21-band graphic equalizer etc. Let alone the possibility of integrating loops as well, as Gilbert already indicated.

Sounds great and glad you're still around.

Thank you, @Marinus! I did a metal song as well, but I don't remember where it is.

    P.S.: ah, voilà:

  • Good stuff in here!!

Muito bacana, Dimitri! Muito bom mesmo!
Mach 5 indeed.... Great layers of Strats.
A question: is it Heavy Metal kit from the pack? It sounds well blended with the guitars.
Thanks for sharing other tracks too.
    Obrigado! Merci.

I did a track where all drums were made with DrumPerfect:

  • Thank you, @Marinus and @Gilbert! Gilbert, I really don't remember. Though most probably I used some sort of combination: bass instruments from a kit, hats and cymbals from another.

  • @Kranick: are those two parts of longer tracks? If so, curious for the rest ;-)

  • I am curious as well...
