Is an audiointerface for USB keyboard really neccesary?
Is it worth it to shlep an audio interface around if I already have a USB class compliant keyboard for my iPad? I know the DACS and converters in my iPad Pro are consumer grade but will I really hear a difference when I'm playing say my Collosus piano? I know there's latency through USB but I can adjust it down to 5ms so it's not an issue.. (Collosus piano is WELL WORTH IT,BTW.

If you're just talking about MIDI then no.
Just for monitoring? I don't.
I have a Steinberg UR22mk2 and I struggle to hear any difference in sound quality between it and just plugging straight into the headphone jack on an iPhone 6s or Air2. However it is worth having it for keyboard plus vocals, recording, easy mixing mic/keyboard and having some solid 1/4" line outs.
Off Topic. Can you tell us more about the Colossus Piano. I'm finding it hard to see any reviews anywhere. What are you running it on and how does it compare to say iGrand?
Thanks Cain and Rueben..
Rueben, I don't have "I Grand" , but I have the comparable Korg Module "Synthology Ivory Hrand" at 2 gig bs 14 gig on Colossus. I'm presently playing it through a Korg Mikrokey AIR 49 and there is a noticible difference for sure. Colossus has 24 muktisples per note..I'm running it at 5ms latency which isn't noticeable for the most part. It's stupendous.. a must buy if you practice or play piano at all.
No
Thanks Telstar5. If you happen to have bs-16i I'd love to hear a comparison with the Salamander Piano that you can download for free from here https://sites.google.com/site/soundfonts4u/
Cheers
Thanks, supdom.. I've learned to trust your opinion
Rueben I don't have it but you just cannot beat 14 gig/24 samples per note done well. Christopher knows what he's doing
I've just got my studio monitors back after moving and still have no audio interface. My iPad Air2 sounds bloomin good plugged straight into my monitors. So I think if you have to ask the question, you probably don't need the expense.
I would ask myself the following:
Do I need to record audio to another device? If yes then it may be worth you getting one.
Do I have great speakers in a suitable listening room? If yes it may be worth you buying one.
Do I need other inputs and outputs? If yes it may be worth buying one.
If you just want to monitor your music making from your iDevice, then you may have better uses for the money, especially if your monitors are pants or the room makes anything sound boomy and horrible.
