  • Pretty cool! Link is taking over, as it should...

    ...from midi clock and any other form of sync with a master/slave workflow.

  • Doubtful, unless somebody comes up with an extremely cheap hardware device circa $30 or so that receives Ableton Link via ethernet and converts it to MIDI Clock/MTC, nobody with a ton of external hardware can use Ableton Link in any useful way right now, and if each device needs a hardware add on, it needs to be cheap enough to be worth it, and it needs to be ethernet because using WIFI on stage is asking a lot ;)

  • Raspberry pi fits the description but I don't know if anyone is working on it. ITOH it still seems few people without computer and link on stage.

    A cheap device like an old iPad or iPhone connected to a iConnectMIDI4+ while running the MIDI Link Sync app to convert from Ableton Link to MIDI sounds like it mIght check all of the boxes. The iCM4+ has a Ethernet port.

    [iOS running MIDI Link Sync] --> [iCM 4+] --> {Ethernet switch} <-- [External instrument]

    With the iCM 4+, there's also the added bonus of configurable MIDI routing and filtering.

  • Thats a lot of expense to try and replace a proven system, yes Ableton link is great, taking over, no, not where hardware is concerned (yet)

  • agreed. Link is also much more flexible for syncing multiple laptops or syncing apps on the same computer/iOS device. Little to no setup plus support for more simultaneous devices than MIDI. You're not going to easily sync 20 devices through MIDI...but that's doable with Link. The only downsides I've found is in a live performance context you have to make sure the bar/beat info matches ahead of time and carefully watch the tempo since any Link device can change it. I wish Link had simple bar sync. Sometimes it's trial and error to get all devices on the same "one".

    I agree. I'm sure there's an argument for "free to start on off measures" but the reality is that most users want the bar sync.

  • The developer of the app using link can decide if it links BPM, so what is needed is more options within app
