How to get Pro-C 2 to Sidechain?

Okay, so I learned how to get the sidechaining flowing via routing MIDI audio through bussing into an audio track, and audio track sidechaining works just fine. I can get Pro-MB to duck my stuff without a doubt.

So, I followed all the same steps in Pro-C 2 that I did with Pro-MB including setting external input via the advanced section and selecting the sidechain track from the plugin wrapper. However, unlike Pro-MB, Pro-C 2 just isn't doing it. I've tried everything to get it to work properly, and no such luck. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or if it's an actual bug. I tried google to no avail. Could somebody please help enlighten me as to what's up? Thank you in advance.

  • In the 'Side Chain" menu bellow the knobs (it will enlarge when you touch the header) there is a switch between "In" and "Ext" to the left. Be sure to select "Ext". Good luck!

True, I did that mate, but it still acts wonky. Is there a certain compression mode I should be using?

  • Set it up like you normally would, then send whatever track is triggering the side chain to a bus, add track or use a spare one, select the bus as the input on the new track, then select that track as the sidechain input in pro c2. I couldn't get it to work the usual more direct way.

  • Just incase what I wrote confused you as much as it did me.

  • Just tested it myself, seems to work as expected:

In the highlighted circular area of my screengrab the red line in the center shows the amount of compression, and you can also see the compression being drawn on the waveform behind it. In the red rectangle the compression is also shown.

I used the side chain to compress a synth whenever the kick drum is played, and the ducking is clearly working, you can see the rhythm in the screenshot.

    A couple of notes:

The Expert window needs to remain open, otherwise the sidechain is not applied. Also using the EQ in the sidechain is a little fiddly, you have to marquee select the points, and then use the on/off switch to activate the HP and LP filters.

Okay, so I just tried all of the advice above, and I've discovered the problem. It seems like Pro-C 2 has no problem getting in an external signal. The problem is it wants to compress the internal signal AND trigger the sidechain at the same time. With Pro-MB I don't have this problem. I simply use one band, and I get the clean pumping I'm looking for. With pretty much all other compressors I've used on the PC, it's one compression technique OR the other.

With Pro-C 2, aside from turning up the sidechain level (which also seems to raise the internal input level somehow), how do I get legitimate sidechain compression going?

  • In sidechain mode the main Threshold level only looks at the sidechain, not the main signal. It should only apply compression when the sidechain signal exceeds the threshold.

This should explain it better. You should be able to stream the vid no problem.

  • OK, will check it later, just going out now.

  • This is a bit strange @richardyot is working as expected, mine works only when I buss the sidechain track and yours @jwmmakerofmusic doesn't seem to be using the sidechain signal at all, although it sees it. Not watched your vid, I'm on ios 9.3.5 and auria pro 2.0.8, ipad air 2, just tried it again and I can't get the the direct method to work, although I am low on disk space and using lyra as the sidechain signal.

I think I know what it is - Lyra. You need an "audio" source, not a "midi" source. That also explains the bus workaround. Bounce down the kick drum track to audio then try again - it should work.

  • @HandOfEmpty If it were the "midi" source problem like I had last week, Pro-MB wouldn't work either. However, Pro-MB works fine with the bus workaround, but Pro-C 2 does not. Check the attached video if you didn't already.

  • Have you tried with a bounced audio source? Pretty sure I had the same problem with the same plugin, and that was the solution.

  • In the bottom of the left Part Pro C you can find midi learn tap and disable midi. I hope it will help

  • I'll be damned. Disabling MIDI actually did the trick!? I have no idea why disabling MIDI worked when that should really be independent from the compression function, but in the end, thank you mate! :) That works!

  • Wow, so that was why. Good to know.

  • Glad it got sorted out in the end I learnt some great tips.
