Pre-treatment of presets

I use standard presets in most of my compositions. A lot of presets, when played solo, are very rich and deep and so on...
But when put together in several tracks, this richness become weakness as your global song sounds "muddy".
What pre-treatment would you suggest to best prepare the different presets before using them in a song? I can see :

  • remove any reverb
  • cut the low and high ends (but this can also be done later with an EQ)

  • Careful placement of instruments in the stereo field is a good start :)

  • I would start where you mean to go on when possible. By this I mean try to choose sounds that already are close to fitting the mix rather than sounds that sound great by themselves.

I would try to work with as few FX as possible, except for those modulation FX that make the sound what it is for the mix.

It may be helpful sometimes to think like a band. There is a reason band have instruments that do specific jobs. Think why am I including this sound, what is its purpose within the mix.

  • The best thing is to mould the sounds in the context of the existing mix, so have the track playing when you test and tweak the presets.

If you build a foundation of drums, bass, riff, and want to add a pad sound behind them for instance, shape that pad sound with the backing playing.
