Midi, controller, Animoog, Geoshred

I bought Animoog, (not a synth guy, but damn it sounds great,) and I already had Geoshred. Got the two working, but I have noticed an oddness. I'm not very experienced with synths or midi. When I drive Animoog with it's built in keyboard, and then Geoshred, there are noticeable differneces in tone. I'm using MPE Channel mode on Geoshred, and MPE input on Animoog. I don't see a whole lot of other things to change. Thoughts, comments? I would have thought it was a straight one to one, but I guess maybe there are controls set up in Animoog not being sent by Geoshred? I'm using the "MIDI Out Control" voice under "Synthy Voices" in Geoshred, which I assume was set up for exactly this circumstance.

  • I think the differences could also be due to how you have things setup in Animoog and GeoShred. Different patches in GeoShred can send different MIDI info to Animoog.

  • That's what I'm wondering about. The setup between the two is pretty simple. I'm missing something. But I'm certainly not an expert.

  • Also noticed this last night with animoog and geoshred. I only tried one preset in both apps. I was hoping to investigate more this weekend - maybe somebody can save me the time? Anyone have any thoughts?

  • One thing, the actual keyboard in Animoog modulates the sound depending on where you press it, so it generates different sounds depending on where on the key you press. Geoshred can't do that. There does seem to be a difference in the rate of oscillation at times, as well.

I don't own geoshred but this is very likely the problem. Animoog interprets the Y axis of its playing tines to be polyphonic aftertouch messages (it calls them "pressure" in the app UI). If geoshred doesn't transmit them, and you've an Animoog patch up that assigns pressure to some sound control, it will sound different. There are other modulation options though that you might be able to get to align between the apps. Go to Env/Mod and tap the dropdown under 'control' to see the options.

  • Yep, the vertical movement on animoog keys will modulate the sound, could be anything depending on the preset. Most often it is the filter that makes the biggest effect on the sound because external MIDI will trigger notes at the top of the Animoog modulated key press, where the filter is most harsh. Usually closing down the filter in the preset will make external MIDI notes work better.

  • Tx guys, will experiment some more.

  • It would appear that the sound triggered by geoshred is the one at the very bottom of the animoog slider. There is a modulation Slider in geoshred, but it doesn't seem to have any effect.

Follow the steps above and change wherever it's says "pressure" to "modwheel". Then that control in geo should do the same thing, sorta. It will affect all notes the same amount whereas with the animoog tines you control it per note. You might also try changing pressure to pitchbend. Then as you wobble your fingers in geo, it should pick it up. With MPE that might get you per note control at the expense of pitch bending.

  • I'm reading a lot of interesting info about Geoshred and Animoog these days. These are two apps very far from my iOS stomping grounds and I doubt that I'll ever own either, but what's being written sounds amazing. Does anyone have any samples recorded that I can take a listen to?

  • @OscarSouth, if you lock on YouTube under Jordan Rudess, he demos geoshred. He's the keyboard player for dream theatre, and his company makes geoshred.

  • Cannot for the life of me figure this out. @jordanwizdom, any thoughts on how to get the modulation slider in geoshred to work with animoog?

  • Hmm, can't get It to work with my irig keys, either. I can see the mod strip on the left of the animoog keyboard light up when I move the mod wheel on the keyboard, but no love. And when I try to use the mod strip itself, just in animoog, nothing. All our days in the animoog manual is:
    MOD STRIPS
MOD and PITCH strips are assignable in the MOD section and can be toggled On/Off in the SETUP page.
And I can't see where you do that. Time to talk to their forum.

my Song of the Month club song for December actually has a lot of GeoShred in it. GeoShred comes in around 2:55 mark

  • Well, after beating my brains out over this, it was actually working as it should. The keys in the midi out control preset do send modulation when sliding up and down. They are just a bit short, confusing this synth nube. Dropping the number of strings to five made a world of difference, giving me a larger slider to play with.
