I've spent this on apps since 2010. Click, you know you want to ;)
Went back and looked at all of my purchases. Added it all up, and the grand total in the last almost 7 years is: $3,300.00.
I'd say, less than 1% of that total was spent on non music apps. You know, stuff for the kids, or whatever.
I guess I am a bit shocked.....I honestly didn't think it was that much. We all talk about being app addicts, I guess this is proof that..........I am. I am on lock down ATM for buying apps.
But......I think it will be a good thing. I can finally concentrate on my Arsenal without adding to it. And....it truly is an arsenal. I still do believe, that with Bias FX/AMP and JamUp and Tonestack, and Auria, Cubasis, Multi-track DAW, and the mega-shiat-ton of Synth apps I have, are all less expensive than what it would-a cost me to buy hardware versions, and a decent DT DAW with Fab Filter stuff. I have Reaper, and it is really good.
But.....when I look at that number, I do think that I, man I could have gotten a decent DT DAW, a nice half stack, with some good distortion/Chorus/FX/overdrive.Several guitar pedals. And, would I actually buy a hardware synth? Probably not. But, While I could have bought all of that, I would not be able to afford the amount of pedals and FX I have available in Positive Grid apps, ToneStack, Auria Cubasis, Fab Filter ios prices...........and so on. I love love love being able to touch a screen and have more synth sounds available to me than I know what to do with. I have a midi keyboard, but...I still prefer the ipad. Especially with cool stuff like ThumbJam and ifretlessbass, and all the other weird/cool/crazy apps out there, that seem pretty unique to ios.
Still........That's a shit ton of money I spent on this gig, huh?

So think about how much this would have been if it was pc software (x10) or actually a roomful of hardware (x100) and you have every right to be smug sir! Touch screens were introduced on hardware synth (my roland v synth gt has one) but they are slow. PC Software synths still focus on point and click, so IOS, designed to be touch first has a great supply of apps that work well without a mouse.
I do have all the AppStore/iTunes receipts but I refuse to sum em up as it would only bring up bad memories from my app-a-holic days. I mean I've since I removed my credit-card info from iTunes spent over well over $500 on 'Gift Cards' but at least I have a bit better control this way.(My current iTunes balance is 511SEK ~$55USD)
It's a lot more than your average software customer spends, but if you average it out, it's less than $500/year. I've seen similar figures from a few others here, and some people spend more than that their hobby.
You are OK, and among friends. I have seen people spend thousands on a single free to play game over just a few months.
I like to compare buying apps to buying takeaway coffee or at a cafe ( which I don't , but many people do enjoy on a daily basis)
Quick conservative maths @ 5 cups a week @ A$3.50 = $910 per annum.
My (justifying) logic is that apps are less addictive, more fun , infinitely reusable, possibly income producing, and (mostly) leave a better taste in my mouth.
I'm counting mine up, but just the music apps. JR HEXATONE!!! Lol. So many here to count. Why on earth was I so addicted to camera apps back in 2011?!?
EDIT: How on earth did I only pay $2.99 for Animoog?!
@High5denied I'm sure you're a snowflake in a lot of other ways. Up top!

Yikes. That's a lot of scratch! Still, it's one Dave Smith OB-6 and a used Circuit. And maybe a pair of on sale headphones. Doesn't even include an amp or a way to mix them together. Or 5 strymon pedals and a knock off fender.
Did you add up your actual receipts or total it up in some other way?
Hello, my name is high5denied and I'm an appaholic.
Everyone: Hello high5denied (and welcome to the club).
I have spent 2500$ on musicapps since I've gotten the first iPad back in 2010...
Totally worth every penny!
It gives me so much meaning with my life!
1372 apps from all categories in my library, some free some not so free not to mention IAPs.
And well a fair bit of music too...
Even if the apps average at ~$1 it's still quite a lot.
And that's only for iOS. If we start to add 'desktop' software and occasional hardware gizmo it gets scary...
Hello everyone, I'm samu and I'm a recovering app-a-holic...
I have tried to be judicious with my app spending, as I was well aware of GAS before making music on iOS was a thing. I still occasionally feel a bit guilty about overspending, but overall I think I've done well.

I actually started a Google spreadsheet where I was comparing the price of an iOS app to it's hardware equivalent on eBay, and calculating how much it would cost.
I like to continue the project if anyone wants to crowd source the data.
One important thing to think about also, is sales. While I have spent a fair amount of money, out of love for both music, and developers, I have also gotten so many apps on fire sale. For the first several years, I had a strict "wait in till it goes on sale, and then use an iTunes discount card".
Recently, I've been more relaxed, as my costs on iOS are greatly reduced compared to a desktop platform, and I even bought Ableton suite and some VST's this year. Notably virtual guitarist, and ezkeys.
Anyway, anyone care about the spreadsheet?
Look at it as "a deep engagement with the iOS ecosystem."
I'm curious what category of apps is the largest next to music in your collection?
What would the easiest way to calculate how much you have spent. I am sure I have all the emails sitting in my gmail account but going through 1 by 1 would be time consuming.
the part we can help each other with is trimming the fat. I've gotten a truly mediocre deal on the apps I use, because I had to (well, chose to) buy so many duds, only just to figure out what it was that made them unusable, either instability or lacking a crucial feature. I wish I could have donated that money, instead, to fund development of my favorite apps. It is wonderful that there are so many flavors in the market to choose from, and anyone with development skills can jump in, but there are so many incomplete and disappointing apps being peddled.
Before equating a massive app collection to a room of hardware, remember it has zero resale value. it also has a limited shelf life. I think it is good the original poster told us their final price tag, as a word to the wise.
Thanks for all the support guys! lol. The Seinfeld meme is too funny.
I went into my account on my computer. Went to purchases, and it's got every app/music/movie and so on that I've ever bought, or got fer free, IAP's. I added up all the pages. and that is the rest of the story.
Has anyone figured a way to calculate spending without manually going through each receipt?
that's the only way I was able to.
So, I don't guess it took to long. About 30 mins to calculate, going through emails, 1 by 1. Including MainStage, my total purchase is $499.26.
I was expecting a little bit more but I have won a great deal of apps through the sound test room, other code grabs, I usually only buy apps on sale, got a few from developers, several through AudioNewsRoom when I was writing a few articles for them so. I can't complain.
That has been since April 2013, when I first purchased Loopy HD, v1.3.2.
well, I guess I didn't exactly go through each separate email or receipt. In account settings I had all my purchases listed on 76 different pages. So, I think that way is easier to go through than each individual email?
Party pooper
I've not counted sizes but it's a lot of Photography/Graphics & Video apps and other 'Tools' for doing VNC remote and FileManagement among other things and well some Games...
This can't be said enough:
I am waiting to get a smallest next generation iPad Pro that has 4GB of RAM. That will be a dedicated music device, with some other apps that benefit from the form factor.
My iPad air two will become a "work", "game", "graphics" device.
Quick calculation, over seven years that's less than $40/ month, mate. Spend on, good man, spend on!!!
It would be a shame to spend any less on such a noble hobby.
Jajaja, i wanna say you're totally fine and that its really not a lot of cash because... I'm way over that amount .
I have no regrets.
I've tried this manually in iTunes and it took me ages to refresh pages so I gave up. I don't think Apple wants us to know how much we're spending. They want us relaxed and reckless.
I doubt I would have spent much over a grand in the past 5 years and to be honest I've enjoyed every bit of it so no tears.
But who really gives a shit when you're comparing a $10 app to hardware synth that costs thousands of dollars/pounds/euros. I don't really get the comparison.
