Holiday Apology to Telecharge, et al.

Hi,

I made a post last night before heading off to our families holiday tradition of joining friends at a cool Chinese restaurant for Christmas Eve. We started doing this several years ago based on a humorous scene in the movie A Christmas Story where the family's Christmas dinner is devoured by the neighbor's dogs, and then end up going to a Chinese restaurant for dinner.

There's a scene where the Chinese cooks sing to the family, but are mispronouncing the words. The family just sits there enjoying the goodwill, but the restaurant manager humorously corrects them.

I wanted to wish everyone here a very happy holiday and used the scene and quote from the scene in my post.

One user stated that it was culturally insensitive of me, and another user tried to shame me into changing the post title. I tried in vane to convince these two folks that there was nothing malicious intended and it was just a humorous holiday wish for all here.

I didn't change the title because at that point, the two users cited had made such a big deal about it, that I was concerned others would assume much worse.

There aren't many of you that I know. I thought I knew at least one of these folks, but I guess I didn't after all.

From this one post that was intended to be of good will and good cheer, it devolved into insinuating that I was a bigot and and ignorant racist. Those who really know me, know that I don't have a racist or bigoted bone in my body. I routinely stand up against racism and bigotry every chance I get.

I regret posting what I thought was a humous wish to all for a wonderful holiday and good will to all. I had no idea that the scene in the Chinese restaurant is so dreadfully offensive to some. I figured since it's a favorite holiday family movie in the United States, that maybe a funny quote from it would be safe from any hint of ill will.

That being said, I know nothing of Chinese American culture. Had I known or realized that it would be so painfully offensive for @telecharge or anyone else who was offended, I would have most certainly refrained from the posting.

In my defense, the VERY FIRST reply I made to @telecharge was an apology and stated that perhaps the thread should just be deleted.

Again, my deepest apologies to all who were offended by the clip I quoted from the movie A Christmas Story. I only wanted to wish my virtual group of iOS music friends here a spectacular holiday and thought some might get a chuckle. I come here for the common passion for iOS sound apps, and learn what I can. I try to return the favors any chance I get. I'm grateful for everything I've learned here and have felt warmly as part of this community.

It was never my intent to offend anyone at all. Mea culpa. :(

  • I guess you're exaggerating for dramatic effect, but I didn't find your post "dreadfully offensive" or "painfully offensive," and I said nothing of the sort. I just thought it was in poor taste and inappropriate for an international forum.

    Apology accepted.

  • Way to cowboy up, @skiphunt! Hope you've been having a great Christmas. Same to all who are celebrating, and all the very best wishes of the season to those who may be celebrating something else, or nothing at all. Here's to a very happy and appy 2017!

  • Yeah guys ..look...I'm a Pogan (mixture of a Bogan and a Pagan ) and I'm totally offended by the cultural appropriation of my Sacred Beer Drinking Herbal Imbuing Solstice Celebratory Ceremony (SBDHISCCmas) at the hands of the dominant Judeo Christian discourse.
Please refrain, in this forum, from further insensitive reference and allusions to Xmas, Christmas, Yuel or whatever title you may wish to culturally impose upon such sacred and important days in my ancient (since 1977 ) solar/lunar calendar.

  • I wouldn't begrudge anyone the opportunity to extend their Christmas or holiday wishes/greetings, be they religious or otherwise.

Happy Festivus for the rest of us! I'm about to hit that eggnog.

  • Classy @skiphunt

Can the airing of grievances start now?

I don't know, but I think people should stop being so thin-skinned. This culture of politically correct thought policing and censorship really needs to stop, because it's giving the term "liberal" a bad rep. It's the OPPOSITE of free speech.

Words themselves don't count but rather the INTENT of the person speaking/typing them. If skiphunt meant any harm, then YES we have a right to call him on it. However, let me address Skippy here for a second.

"It's culturally insensitive", "you're a racist", "you're a bigot". @skiphunt , did you use any racial slurs? Did you actually say you hated a group of people? Did you say one group of people is inferior to the rest? No, no, and no? Then why should you be apologizing and kowtowing to these thin-skinned crybabies?

God forbid should they have a sense of humour or, worse, let loose and feel any joy and pleasure in this life without forcing a set of arbitrary rules down everybody else's throats and falsely accusing them of abhorrent shit. And you wonder why Jerry Seinfeld doesn't perform his brand of comedy on college campuses anymore.

Except nobody said those things. It's you guys on Team Skip doing all the name calling. Why do you reckon that is?

I'm on team Audiobus. Just want to get back to audio/video & sound related topics.

It's not an us vs them. We're all here for the same reason for the most part. Can we try to remember that?

I made a post to wish everyone a great holiday. I used humor. Some felt it wasn't tasteful. I apologized. The apology was accepted. Shouldn't that pretty much be the end of it?

I recon so mate. I guess I was irritated by something outside of this thread, and so I grossly misinterpreted the situation here, making an arse of myself along the way. Guess it's my turn to apologise, isn't it?

@telecharge I'm sorry for acting like an arse and assuming wrong mate. You've been nothing but helpful to me in other questions I've had, so I'm sorry.

    @jwmmakerofmusic bravo! :)

  • No worries, @jwmmakerofmusic. I hope you enjoy the rest of the holidays. :)

  • @telecharge You too my good friend. :)

@skiphunt And I hope you also have a great rest of the holidays too mate. Thanks for the compliment by the way.

  • Brother, don't sweat it; obviously, you meant no harm.
    Happy Holidays!

Thanks man! Yeah, it was meant to be light-hearted. Funny... I posted the exact same thing on my Facebook page and no one had any problem with it at all. Even asked a couple of my Chinese American friends and they thought it was funny. Go figure.

Happy Holidays to you too amigo :)

  • It's obvious this is just going to degenerate into another bun fight. Why not take this onto Facebook where it belongs?

  • I don't care how funny the movie was any longer, this thread is hilarious in it's own right! :)
    Thanks ,

  • All the religious celebrations henceforth are cancelled, they create waaaay too much animosity.

    Happy day all!

  • I thank God each and everyday which is a daily celebration that no one is able to cancel thankfully . I do not doubt that your lighthearted suggestion will one day soon be enacted however judging what I have seen thus far from the thought/Dream police.

  • It's not about religion. It's about common courtesy and consideration of others.

Will a spoonful of sugar help the medicine go down?

Yep, I've got plenty more in the tanks if anyone wants to press the issue. C'mon out and show everyone how fucking clueless you are.

  • Dear oh dear

Really? You have no doubt about that? Not a tiny bit of doubt that we might all be able to get along, even after someone posted a public apology, someone else accepted it? ;)

    Everybody chillax.

Btw I'm sinking this thread once more because I'm trying to keep these things out of the way of discussions about music making.

  • Uh oh, we're sinking :open_mouth:
Before we hit the bottom I would like to use this opportunity to humbly apologize for any inconvenience or irritation I may have caused or may cause to any of you or anyone else at any point in time. My intentions are noble at the very least, I assure you, and if I should ever do injustice to anyone by stupid humour or plain ignorance it is unintentional and shall rightfully be condemned etc... Merry Christmas or whatever it is you're celebrating these days :kissing_closed_eyes:

  • @Munibeast said:

  • Correct and thank you again.

  • I've never heard of anything in the movie A Christmas Story being offensive to anyone. Again, that's why I thought it was perfectly fine and had very little chance of offending anyone. And, as stated... it didn't offend anyone else on another platform. But, those folks know me and @telecharge doesn't. Though, I thought @decibelle did (pity)

I figured, if the reference of the Chinese restaurant in A Christmas Story was so offensive that it incited an entire thread where I was insulted and it was insinuated that racism, bigotry, and ignorance were at play, then I had to apologize. Again, my very first reply post in that thread was an apology and suggestion to delete the thread.

When I'm in Mexico, the locals frequently will have a laugh and make fun of how the gringos mispronounce things. It's true, we often do. And it's often humorous how wrong we get it, especially when native English speakers try to pronounce the double "l's". We always laugh together about that. It's never taken as an insult.

Then again, I haven't walked in Telecharge's shoes and I don't know what it's like to interact in my own culture as an Asian American. I know people can be ugly with their berating and belittling of those different from themselves. I know this happens a lot in the US, but I also know it happens in other countries too.

So, if anything I referenced, including a seemingly benign line from a classic holiday family movie, was enough to offend anyone at all for any reason... then, as a person who wants to be a good citizen of the world and be sensitive to my fellow brothers and sisters, then all I can do is apologize and try to be more sensitive in the future. That's what I've done.

In December of 2010 my dying Uncle from Denmark came over with his wife to see us for the last time. When we were sitting around the kithchen table my brother played this video for us and my Uncle was laughing so much. Two years later he passed away from ALS
This video brings back a warm memory, thanks

  • @yug Ha! Just watched that video... funny. Cheers :)
