There's been a disturbance in "The Force"

Gone to a galaxy far far away...
FUCK YOU, 2016.
For one glorious moment I thought Tony Blair had popped off.
Wow, rough year.
Now Richard Adams has died too. A grand old age though.
Yes. Liked the book, but wasn't persuaded by the man. Seems oddly unfair that Dickie got 36 years more than Carrie, but them's the way of it I s'pose.
Damn, looking over a list on the NYT and I can't believe how many musical deaths I'd already forgotten about. Merle Haggard, George Martin, Papa Wemba, Bernie Worrell, Rudy Van Gelder, Mose Allison, Leon Russell, Keith Emerson (and greg lake!)...
Very sad about Carrie Fisher and at a relatively young age too. Heck, Mick Jagger's still having kids 13 years older! A disturbance in the Force for sure.
Yep you never know how many you're going to get, don't matter what cards ya play.
My wife and I were just watching the "8 Out Of 10 Cats" show she was in London to film the other night and commenting on how funny she was. So sad.
Tragic year![:'( :'(](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/cry.png)
I'm going to light a torch in memory of her passing and reflect on one of my cinematic highpoints the strangling of jabba the hut.
Tony blair reminds me of lando calrissian minus the redemption.
Fuck 2016!
And fuck, I really miss "Curb Your Enthusiasm"
Lousy serial killing year. Still not done killing off our celebrities are ya? Discontent to simply kill off our most influential musicians, now it's gotta kill off every ner....BOY'S childhood crush before her fucking 80s? No longer will I say "less than a week to go", because when I say it and mean it, somebody else drops dead. The other deaths were bad enough, but this one is a real shot to the balls.
Disney better do a damn good job paying their respects to Carrie in Episode VIII, that's all I can say.
They're going to have their work cut out for them on February 26, 2017....
Assuming Don McLean is still alive when I finish this sentence, I think the time has come to scribe the YEAR the music died. Sheesh. And Richard Adams, too? At least it doesn't have that "far too young" feel that became the hallmark of 2016's Celebrity Abattoir. I once counted - in a one sentence paragraph opening an early chapter of "Watership Down," he used something like 12 commas, three hyphenated asides, two parenthetical phrases and a pair of semi-colons - and it worked.
Poor Carrie. Talk about the life in your years ...![:disappointed: :disappointed:](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/disappointed.png)
I liked her best in The Blues Brothers.
A horrible year
Rest In Peace
The Kevin Smith stuff ranks up there too!
What a year.
So many dead people and personal disasters.
^^ Ha! Carrie Fisher slayed Lucas in some style there.
I'm very critical of the Cult of Celebrity that exists in our world today, where far too much value & attention is placed at the feet of actors, athletes, musicians and as we've seen lately, "politicians".
That being said, I also feel the importance of support & recognition of artistic endeavors is one of the pillars of a great society.
It's really comes down to a fine balancing act, celebrating art and even the power of inconsequential entertainment but stopping short of a delusional, embarrassing "us & them" celebrity culture where people of little merit besides their appearance are deified and given a distorted sense of import & gravitas.
I also know for myself it's based on my own tastes and what contribution an individual has made to their genre & society as a whole. I believe that is what has made 2016 such a blackhole of sadness. The majority of the people who passed this year fit the bill of not just "Celebrity,", but of Artist, Visionary and just all around quality human being.
Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, George Michael, Muhammad Ali, George Martin, Gene Wilder, Leon Russell and Carrie Fisher all fit that bill and in turn are losses to not only their perspective family but to society at large.
I also think this Grim Reaper Year has to be put in perspective a bit in that yes, 2016 seems to have claimed an inordinate amount of celebrities and artists. But EACH year, hundreds of thousands of anonymous but good, decent, hard working, talented and extraordinary people die without fanfare.
Their families are the ones bearing the grief of their loss, and I try to respect that just because someone "famous" passes and the world mourns, there are family and friends who've lost a family member... Mother, Father, etc.
Be safe & have a great New Year...
I think this new trend in collective mourning reveals a big misconception and insecurity of how we deal with death in general.
Of course I also regret the death of Carrie Fisher. I like her wit in her interviews, and I like her roles in the movies. But in truth it is absolutely normal to die one day, and there certainly is no "disturbance in the force" at all! If someone thinks it is a disturbance, this person really has to learn a lot ... about life in general, and about "the force".
Think about it. Don't be offended (this is not my intention anyway). Just think about it.
You can also think the other way round: if people lived forever in their physical form, if there was no physical death, this would be wrong. This would be terrible. And it's impossible too. So, therefore, everything is alright as it is. There's a reason for mourning, but there's no reason to think that people's natural deaths were a bad thing.
Personally I believe that the human's soul cannot die, and I guess this makes it much easier for me to deal with death. I understand that for people who don't believe this, death is always a tragedy. Which is a tragedy in itself.
And now, Debbie Reynolds.
Wow, that's just too odd and sad.
