High pitch whine when Circuit connected to Modstep via USB midi

It's so annoying.

Setup: iPad 4, cck to USB hub, circuit, craft synth and mixer connected to hub. Modstep sequencing craft synth and sending clock to craft synth and circuit. Midi jack out of Circuit into Volca keys for sync. Keys synced to Volca sample and bass via sync leads.
This all works fine apart from the introduced noise.
Close Modstep and the noise goes.

The problem doesn't occur with Auxy, but I'm having problems with Auxy sending a filter control change to my craft synth and can't work out why or how.
The circuit/Modstep setup would be ideal if only I could sort out the whining noise. I'm sure it doesn't happen when connected through the midi jacks, only through USB.

Has anyone else encountered this and did you find a solution?

  • I should add. I don't think it's just Modstep. I loaded Nanostudio as well and the noise started again. It's not all apps though.

  • Yes, midi over USB gives me a whine too with Circuit. I end up using the regular midi when recording. Tis a shame.

  • Thanks for that. Yes, a real shame.

  • By chance is it a USB3 hub?
They seem to have issues with interference and noise; if I use mine on my PC, it messes with my wireless mouse and makes similar noises that you describe, though I don't have the same problem with my similar iPad rig connected.
You may want to try another hub, also don't use the same hub for both the iPad power and data connections.

No, not USB3. I may have to try another hub.

    Cheers

  • you are experiencing USB Ground Loop...there are solutions that solve this...some less expensive than others....I use this: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=365781&gclid=CLmzpYisotECFZ64wAodVyUGag&is=REG&ap=y&m=Y&c3api=1876,92051677682,&Q=&A=details

works with laptops and usb audio too...

theres an adapter that works at the usb port vs. the power plug...it sells for a couple of dollars from China... but it escapes me atm...I'n not sure how safe the other options are...

    Thanks for that.
I have found a temporary work around, but it's not ideal in the long run.
I've never really used the hub much in the past so it's the first time I've encountered this and it seems timo be a very common problem.

I'd prefer to use all Din midi, but the Modal craft synth requires USB midi which is a pain in the arse.

  • That noise is nightmare but I have a treatment

You can simply try opening a USB cable and cut the black wire. If the Circuit USB controller does not use the voltage from an external USB port it should continue to work.
If the noise does not stop, cut the shield (ground) . Depending on the setup ,your USB connection may work only when all connected to the mixer .
