Revisiting lightweight iPhone DAW options?

Seems like once a year I revisit the various DAW options for iPhone, never buy one away coming away disappointed. I'm looking for a DAW that at a minimum can:

Import/export midi files.
Record midi from other apps (virtual midi in/out)
Record audio (w/AB)
easy to use piano roll editor.
has a small footprint, <500 MB preferable.

Comments

  • Beatmaker 2.

    Although it's 713MB unfortunately.

  • BM2. Some folks suggest music studio right about here but I've never used it.

  • I find Music Studio very easy to work with/edit in, and it does do all of those things, but the download size is larger than the OP wanted. But it's my go to DAW for my clumsy attempts at 'symphonic work'.

It's late in the game but I'm really tempted to buy & learn BM2, though, due to these two advantages:

--Sample based instruments can have velocity layers (MS is one sample per pitch)
--Ability to edit pitch bends after the fact (MS records pitch bends in the MIDI roll but you can't tweak their shape after recording them, only keep or reject them)

  • Harmonic Dogs is nice for recording audio. Easy to use for the most part.

However, at this point, I mainly just AUM it or into LOOPY and xfer to iPad

  • BeatMaker 2 though BM3 is possibly coming out late January or whenever they squash all the bugs they find out of beta. It's not clear if BM3 will be universal.

  • I would suggest music studio as well were it not for the size, it grew to about 900mb when they added the symphonic instruments.
Other than that it ticks all the boxes and is clear enough even on a phone screen to be useable.

Depending on whether you prioritise size footprint or multi-features under one roof ...

For multi-app minimal size, NanoStudio for midi, TwistedWave editor for audio, MultiTrackDAW for mixdown, might work for you.

Unfortunately NanoStudio hasn't been updated for a couple of years but it's still one of my favs and works on iPhone.

Thanks for the comments. I have BM2 and could never get past fighting with the interface. It's just always been an exercise in frustration to me. For instance, I just tried opening a custom drum kit that I put together a few years ago, and the latest version wouldn't recognise it.

  • Would anyone consider Gadget or GarageBand to be a DAW? Gadget has the ability to edit MIDI data, but GarageBand can only record sounds, not MIDI using external apps, correct? I've been using GarageBand with its own instruments, but now I'm starting to learn Gadget.

Wonder if the file is corrupt or the samples are no longer in the right folder. It's so weird so many people have issues with BM2's interface but then I have the same problem with Cubasis. What was the error message?

  • BM2 which took a while to become fluent (fluid?) in. A long while actually

but I bashed my head against it till I got comfortable (or just stupid from head trauma), because it does almost everything I'd need, including as compared with what there is on iPad...

Yes the file system seems labyrinthine (it's like that because it's cross referencing the entire library for the user by artist genre instrument etc etc etc. which maybe nobody needs...)

But it hosts IAA instruments, has best sampler of all iOS DAW, and the editors and timeline views are decent the way say energyxt is...which is modest but fully capable

Agreed + BM2's IAA Instrument and IAA Generator support are excellent.

Not sure what's wrong. Theres the main instrument file that BM2 doesnt even see when I browse to where it's located. I'll keep playing with it. I may need to try some other folders or something. I had issues back when I made it too, and I think I got it working when I nested it and the sample folder deeper in a subfolder.

The reason for my DAW quest is I have an old iPhone w/Alchemy+expansions that I want to try to put to use somehow, but it's only a 16gb phone so I'm very limited with space.

  • OP

If you are looking for an actual DAW, I get it.

For me, I like to organize sounds more than do DAW programming and editing.

That being said, I use LOOPERSONIC for most arranging needs.

It is like my DAW canvas, allows me to move around loops and play along in a quick and intuitive way.

It is more rough sketching. Also, he is about to add LINK as well.

I'll give that a try, thanks for the heads up. UPDATE - tried to purchase and it requires iOS 8 or later (I'm on 7)
