nicely done. What is 'Refractions'? Is this an iOS app?

Edit: ah, found it. It's spelled 'Refraktions'.

  • Very cool stuff skip. The pads & ethereal effects were cool, and I really dug the visuals. Coming from an audio background I don't know too much about video, but researching this LumaFusion app was very interesting. It appears to be like an almost video editing version of Auria, meaning it's a pro quality editor with a great layout & feature set. Might be worth picking up...

Thanks! Refraktions needs background audio, and sometimes loses midi connection when switching between apps, but I've worked around it and still love the app. :)

  • Very well done

It's been very solid for me, and there was a fresh update to the Lumafusion app last night to make it even more stable. They say new features are coming soon as well. I thought their original sale was going to last just until the end of the year, but it looks like they extended it some. I don't know by how much, but if this is something that would be a good fit for you, I'd nab it up quick. :)

Thanks! I'd actually just done a test of the latest update to Refraktions and then described what I did in another thread.. then figured I'd post the track but my space allotment for soundcloud is used up... so I decided to make a quickie video instead so that I could use YouTube.

Realized I've already cleared off all the images and videos from my iPad to make space for traveling. So I just made some quick abstract images that I could quickly/easily animate in Lumafusion instead.

  • I like watching these, nice to have some original visuals for the music, look forward to seeing some more

Muchas gracias my good man! :)

Messaged the dev about the lack of background audio. He quickly replied with this:

Thanks for sharing the link - beautiful song. You’re really using RF the way I had hoped - as a generative sequencer.

And thanks for the detailed feedback. It’s great to learn more about how other people are using it. I hadn’t thought of RF being a background app while other apps are firing off at the same time, but it’s a great idea.

The thing that is currently missing that would need to change is I don’t have a stop / start button. So if someone used the app, then left it, it would continue to play indefinitely unless they force quit it. So in the next update I’ll add a play / pause button so people can control the playback, and then I can safely enable background audio / MIDI output.

Thanks so much for the detailed usage. The next update will have this.

  • Background audio now introduced in the latest update of Refraktions.

    Works nicely.

  • I swore I'd put a pause in app buying but Refraktions looks right up my generative alley. With a responsive dev it would be rude not to ...

Yeah me too...be nice to see a few more vids though...

My reasoning was that it costs less than my train commute into work (one way) and if I wangle working from home one day this week I've actually turned a profit from buying it.

I can basically talk myself into anything. :)

  • That shit was siiick!! Motivating also, thanks skip!

  • How does Refractions work exactly?

What is the method of the madness besides just random pressing?

    @skiphunt
Do you have any control options using Refraktions or only bpm and moods ?
Is it possible to interact with the screen and change the sounding/melodies ?
Im asking because the app store description is a bit vague and this seems a nice app to create some organized synth chaos :)

  • @RustiK, @Proto

As far as I can tell you are at the mercy of the algorithm and the one set of 7 internal sounds (routable individually via MIDI).

Interaction seems limited to skipping back or forward in the sequence or resetting it completely. There seems to be some internal AI that learns what you like over multiple sessions, this can also be reset.

I have a soft spot for soundscapes that evolve automatically so I'm going to be having fun routing this to other apps. Certainly not for everyone though, might be lacking a bit of control for some.

Link and tempo is adjustable though (double finger drag, seems a bit picky).

You've got different fields to touch with different pitches. You also have a jog wheel that speeds the progression forward and backward. You can also adjust bpm on the fly. You can either route the apps 7 "instruments" to different midi channels, or combinations of grouped instruments, i.e. Instruments 1-3 could al, control one synth on 1 channel, and the other channels could control different external synths. Or, mix the internal sounds/instruments with some external synths.

It supposedly has an A.I. algorithm that learns from your choices on interaction, and responds accordingly, but I'm not clear on how that works exactly.

Sounds like a very unique new futuristic app. Gonna give it a try later today. Thanks for sharing.

I had some dialogue with the dev and it sounds like he's got some interesting ideas for future updates, and he's working on another beat version too.

I'm happy with the app. When many of us asked for background audio, he was quick to respond and update with more tweaks to the midi control too.

Just purchased and loving it. A lot if hidden controls when touching different parts of the screen. Its perfectly suited to create weird soundscapes and ambient moods. Great find and thanks for all the info.

I really like that it's generative and it's using excellent algorithms, but it also lets you have a good amount of control over the direction it's going.

If you have questions or suggestions, the dev is super approachable and responsive. :)

  • It seems to produce some stuck midi notes from time to time (notes that have no 'note off').

Other than that it works pretty nicely.

Cool app, but i wished it supported some more scales like mixolydian mode. Sometimes I have to restart the app before midi out start working, but overall works nicely.

Yesterday controlled thumbjam with 7 different instruments loaded and it produced pretty impressive orchestral sounds. :)
