Midi Control and Multiple Apps

edited August 2013 in General App Discussion

I'm completely new to midi. If I'm using an external controller to control an app, but I have multiple apps running through Audiobus, will the controller only control the app that is currently displayed, or can I also control the other apps? Would it be possible, for example, to trigger Loopy to record a synth while I'm playing it? To trigger a drum pad while I'm in Loopy? Thanks in advance.

  • You can set the controller to a particular channel, and then the receiving synth to the same channel to get it to respond. Some keyboards allow you to set up splits that can have unique midi out channels, which would allow you to assign a unique receiving channel on each synth to allow each to be controlled separately. There are lots of things that can be done, and lots of variants of what I just mentioned.

You are probably referring to Midi sync and Midi transport controls when using your Loopy example. Midi Sync sucks on iOS, but I've heard good things about Loopy's Midi Sync, so what you mention in your example in theory should be workable, but may or may not work, depending upon the software.

  • We could give you a perhaps more useful recipe style answer if you can tell us what controllers you have, and what apps you want to use them with. Not all controllers have live time configurable channels, for instance (e.g. Korg nano series and QuNeo / QuNexus), so other ways may have to be found to disambiguate what they do.

Do you have MidiBridge? That can usually make the right things happen when all else fails.
