Is the iPad Mini 2 good for making music? Please help.

I have a friend who has found a deal for the iPad mini 2 @ $200. Is this any good for making music? I have an iPad Pro but I don't know much about the iPad mini 2 for music creation. Should he go for this deal or try and get something else. Any help would be appreciated.

  • I have a air 2 and a iPad mini 2 and ok the mini is slower But it works too.

  • mini 2 works great here, a few apps reach its limits though (model15, lexingtons in gadget...)

  • I seem to remember @jakoB_haQ uses a Mini 2 for most of his video demos.

  • I use a Mini2 in my setup along with an Air2. Air2 does most of the heavy lifting and Mini2 hosts Audiobus Remote as well as taking a lot of the MIDI controlled processing tasks off the Air2. In general on the Mini2 I run:

    Audiobus Remote
AUM+6x various filters and saturation effects (256 buffer)
    SECTOR
    Two instances of Viking Synth
    Ruismaker
    Patterning
    RF-1
    Zero Reverb

I run this live and have never had any issues with it. It's got a bit of headroom but I wouldn't push it too much further. Maybe run another couple of AU effects or whatnot, at home.

I also do a lot of editing work on Auria Pro with it, on the go which it handles fine.

So yeah, I'd say that it's pretty well equipped for making music. I use it a lot more than my Air2 actually, because it fits in my coat pocket!!

  • Pretty much all I have used for the last 3 years. Works but its showing its age now - for example Model15 works in AUM but don't expect to run anything else big at the same time. Screen size is an issue with some of the more fiddly apps (iMS20 for example). But I really like the small portable size - when the time comes to replace I would go for a mini 4. Just bear in mind the mini 2 is end of life now - so expect more apps to struggle, and goodness knows what iOS11 will do.....

  • Thanks guys I really appreciate your comments.

    love my mini2.

You can do great things with it. It is a matter of how much you want to do at once. like @kitejan says, Model15 cannot run with effects smoothly. outside of that I haven't really run into slowdowns/hiccups. If I do get another ipad in a year or 2 when this one starts showing it's age more I will probably go for another mini size as well.

  • I personally look forward to seeing what the iPad Mini 5 will have to offer since I'm about to upgrade to a new device in the next few months. However, @jakoB_haQ uses the Mini 2 in most of his demos (aka the iOS-related ones) and, I do believe, in his everyday work as well (although he'll have to tell you himself what he uses).
