I used to use one called Camelcrusher a lot back when I used desktop. Google shows me that it still exists.

All the U-he stuff but Podolski is my favourite of the free tools.
There are also a ton of great free FX...too much to list all here.
Sadly i missed the free Arturia filter plug-in at Christmas which costs now 50 bucks and could be also a way for upgrade paths.

  • Digits deserves a bit more attention.

The Phase84 iOS app is based on it and I wish Retronyms would let Louis some time to give the iOS version some love that it desperately needs...

Okay here's some more underground and obscure free VSTs.

Nova3 – Generative Sequencer VST by tonecarver
    https://tonecarver.wordpress.com/nova3-generative-sequencer-vst/

    black irregular synthesizer by ctrlaltdel.org
    http://ctrlaltdel.org/vsti/

Altair 4, SciFi Sounds Lab, by H.G. Fortune

btw all VST instruments by the late H.G. Fortune are worth a look if you're into weird 50s space sounds and like synths as VCS3. Catch them while you can. His website and all his stuff went on black when he died :( Some sites are redistributing them. See YT link above.

  • @mannix said:

    wow altair sound cool! thanks!

  • Dozens. Did you have a particular type in mind?

  • Voxengo MSED gets used almost daily here. Also you're crazy not to get the TDR Records freebies like Kotelnikov, some of the best software tools anywhere for stupid prices or free.

  • Elektrostudio make some nice vintage synth models. Can also vouch for the TAL stuff.

If you're a guitarist or just need cool distortion, check out Poulin amp sims.

GTG synths are pretty cool too.

Autogun from Image Line boasts a sickening number of presets (as in, impossible to find them all in a human lifetime) but last I checked it was a CPU hog.

Oh also one of my favourites is Kamiooka from g200kg. Awesome little modular synth!

  • The free version of Synthmaster Player comes with 350 presets. You can download it here
    https://www.kv331audio.com/downloads.aspx
The paid player currently costs $14 and has 1250 presets

There is also a free demo of the full version of Synthmaster (available on the same page) that has 800 presets, but it only runs for 15 minutes.

  • I think this resource would be helpful, it covers plugins geared towards various genres, with various purposes, hope that helps! There are tons of free plugins to be found

    https://integraudio.com/category/plugins/

  • Eventide - Pendulate

u-he - Tyrell N6; Podolski; Triple Cheese; Zebralette

    Surge Team - Surge XT

    Matt Tytel - Vital; Helm

Spitfire Audio - Labs & BBC Discovery Symphony Orchestra (Discovery is free, after a survey and 14-day wait)

Dave Hillowitz - Decent Sampler, loaded with various free libraries from 'Pianobook'

    Ensoniq SQ80: http://www.buchty.net/ensoniq/

    Roland JX-8P: https://sites.google.com/site/mlvst0/

    Blamsoft's fantastic Minimoog emulation: https://blamsoft.com/vst/vk-1-viking-synthesizer/

And any free synth from https://u-he.com/products/

Not just free but all great sounding emulations.

  • Surge XT is my absolute favorite free and open-source synth, and Spitfire Labs is my favorite sample-based plugin. The only free FX plugins I use are the three Valhalla DSP ones, Freq Echo, Space Modulator, and Super Massive. The great thing with the Valhalla freebies is that they are genuinely innovative plugins that don't have true equals in the world of commercial plugins.

  • Love that Valhalla Supermassive so much. Can’t believe it’s free!!!

  • Vital is so good, paid softsynths have their work cut out for them, justifying any price at all.
