Why Experimental Artist John Cage Was Obsessed with Mushrooms

“I have come to the conclusion that much can be learned about music by devoting oneself to the mushroom,” Cage explained in “Music Lovers’ Field Companion” (1954).

My favorite band, The Allman Brothers liked them very much also.

  • i did not know that about John Cage. Great article.

  • Good timing on this article for me. My wife and my mom and I were just all professing our love for various mushroom treats just this past Sunday at supper. We all enjoy them , my kids , well not so much. We pretty much stick to the various ones found in stores locally but I did hunt them one summer while living in Fitchburg Mass. back in the early eighties.

  • Well, shows where my mind is because my first thought was "Cage dug psilocybin mushrooms? Makes sense..."

Great article, I too knew nothing of his love of searching out all these different types of fungi.

Cage, along with Stockhausen and Terry Riley, helped electronic music go beyond the "sci-fi scary sound effects" perception. Cage's compositions & performance art style expanded the boundaries of music production/performance with different parameters than the classical & pop music of the day.

We all owe the guy a big debt of gratitude.

... And gratitude to mushrooms too!

Yah I assumed as well... and kind of still do...

  • I have met several mycologists in New York City. They are a strange breed of people. Really enthralled to the fungi, and they really don't appreciate the obvious "magic mushroom" jokes.
Which is a shame. But you can find sulfur shelf (or chicken-of-the-woods mushrooms) all over Brooklyn. Not sure I'd eat them without the guidance of John Cage, but apparently they taste exactly like chicken.

  • Because mushrooms brings out the unconscious mind
