128GB USB 3.0 Flash Thumb Drive Storage?

Noticed the prices of 64GB-128GB USB 3.0 flash thumb drives have come down considerably. Was thinking of going to pick up a couple for backup sound + image storage on the road.

But, with Apple moving aggressively toward USB-C and lighting only devices, does that make these bargain USB 3.0 flash drives that will need adaptors for use at some point... legacy/obsolete? Or, do they still have enough lifespan to make them a worthwhile mobile storage solution for the next few years?

  • I've invested a few pennies on a wireless card reader and it's not bad. It creates its own WiFi network so no worries about becoming absolute (for now). I've tried it with 32Gb class 10 sd to stream cartoons which worked but had a few buffering issues. I'd expect it to work fine with samples /audio etc.

It is definitely a cheap option as I paid up to £20 UK, plus some peanuts for the sd. Probably £40 all in with a decent, fast 64gb card.

  • Any links to recommended hardware?

I've got one of the RAVPower wifi blocks. Also functions as a spare usb battery backup. It takes SD cards and it also has a USB port. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T5XQE3U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've had SD cards physically break on me before. The USB thumbdrives seem a little more bulletproof, and I've seen prices for USB3.0 64GB for as low as $10. Haven't checked the current pricing of large SD cards yet... might make more sense to get more of those since I can use them in so many more devices than I can a USB3.0 thumb drive.

  • Just tried transferring an MP3 song and worked flawlessly. Has a dedicated app that lets you browse the drive and openin Audioshare, Loopy, Anytune and similar. Very handy.

Looks like reasonable average speed 64GB SD cards can be had in the $20+ range.. makes more sense than a USB3.0 flash drive that I can't use with any of my cameras or recording devices. The SD's could be used for storage and in most of my devices if needed. More future proof since I don't see the gadget manufacturers moving on from the SD format anytime soon.

@MusicMan4Christ I've got the RavPower wifi SD card, usb, network hub listed in my previous post, but it doesn't look available on Amazon at the moment. I found out about it from someone else on this board several months ago before I bought it. I've traveled with it and it seems like a good, reliable, well-made product.

They have different models too: https://www.ravpower.com/filehub.html

I just made a 525GB portable SSD for $140 with these two pieces:

Sabrent 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 3.0 Tool-free External Hard Drive ($9.99) Enclosure

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OJ3UJ2S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Crucial MX300 525GB SATA 2.5 Inch Internal Solid State (now $139.99) Drive

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IAGSD68/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I only paid $129 for the SSD; the price seems to have gone up.

Just was looking at this one however, it says,
Due to the limitation of the Apple iOS system, you can only access the Photos folder on your iPad? Do I store mp3's in photos to access say in Cubasis?

I don't have Cubasis and have mostly just used it for file transfer... but I can tell you that I can't do most of what I wanted to do using the RavPower app. I have to use the Goodreader app, and that pretty much lets me do transfer everything as I'd hoped.

Cool. I went that route for mobile storage before solid state took hold and when I was traveling with a laptop instead of an ipad only. Then, ran into bus powering complications.

If you are using this as your ipad mobile storage solution, are you also carrying an extra usb powered hub? Or, does the ipad provide enough bus battery power for this?

  • Decided to pick up a 128GB USB3.0 flash thumb drive because I want to also be able to use it in internet cafes or hostel pc machines when available.

So incredible that I just paid $26 for a 128GB USB3 drive that I just speed tested and it's faster than half my 3.5in drives. And, I can still vaguely remember paying $2000 for only a 4GB SCSI drive many moons ago.
